6A-4B archery elk

Long shot here guys. A WI farmboy here has had AZ archery elk
high on his list of things to do for a very long time. At 52 my
window is starting to close on some of the great things I always
intended to experience. So with 7 points I applied for 6A first
choice 4B second hoping draw gods be with me.
With the draw odds being tough for residents also I was wondering if someone with experience in one or the other unit
did not draw if they would want to hunt? Or maybe need a partner
if they draw? I have many references from my hometown as well
as a few from out west as a hunter and a person. I do not have the time to scout or the elk experience to hunt alone. I will
consider a outfitter but would prefer someone who hopefully
would turn into a friend and hunt partner and who knows maybe
could share more experiences down the line.
Don't need no gurantees just someone who can get away from other
hunters and hopefully on a few elk. Hopefully I can draw and
find a hunting partner for a grand slam.

I am originally from wisconsin and been living out here in Arizona for 9 years if you draw 6A i can help you out. I have maps and specific spots that are traditionally good for archery elk in 6A. I also have horses if you want to hunt a couple of the wilderness areas we could probably work something out. Shoot me an e-mail when you draw at [email protected]

pjs and denny, what part of WI are you guys from? Applied with my 7 pts for archery AZ elk this yr as well but now I'm hoping I don't draw as I drew WY. I'm originally from central WI (Stevens Point area).

If you have any points, you'll draw, unfortunately the hunts in 4 b are a lot like an over the counter hunt in colorado. Just not a lot of top end bulls in 4b. Lots of folks running around as well. Not an easy unit to stay away from people.

Good luck

birdog thanks for your imput.I knew when I started applying for
points that I would never hunt a top unit in AZ. If I'm lucky
enough to draw I will be happy with the experience. Hopefully
I can top that and kill a elk.

Well if your just after a hunt, then you should enjoy it. There are plenty of elk. I have had 4 cameras in there for the last 2 years. Have some permanent salt licks set up now in the thickets. If you draw let me know. I'll direct you into a few elk.

Happy to say I'm heading west this fall to hunt elk.I drew 6A
archery, really pumped. Unfortunately I had people willing to
help me out in 4B but not 6A. Plenty of time to fiqure it out
and I will start my research.
I want to thank everyone who replied or pm'd me. I also want
to say congrats to all who had the draw gods on their side.
Also feel bad for the unlucky ones, I had my share of missed
draws and it sucks. Hope everyone has a safe and successful
hunt. Pat

Congratulations! You are in for a fun hunt. Come down early, listen for the bugles and you'll be in elk every day.

I said I would help you in 6A.

Thanks sagebrush. Season runs september13 to 26. Not sure
I could stay that long. Would you recommend to come for the
opener and say hunt 8 days, or come later for 8 days? How will
the full moon effect the hunt, I believe it's the 19th? Pat

Sorry cm I thought with you waiting on your other draws that
maybe it would not work out. Hopefully we can work something
out. Pat

I did not draw this year. Am willing to help in 6A if you are still in need of it when the time comes. Let me know.

Thanks,

Congrats on a great tag!! Now if you can only hunt 8 days, hunt the last 8. Good luck to you!

I just call em as I see em!

Well guys I finally arrived home after 27 hours of actual driving
time. I had stopped for a 5 hour nap along the way. I'm a beaten
man after this hunt with my head spinning. What could have been
the greatest experience of my hunting life was greatly diminished
because of my inability to close the deal. I have had 4 shots at
elk in my life coming into this hunt and have 4 archery elk to my
name, all bulls. Yet I had 3 shots (2 at one bull) and never drew
blood. All were at 60 yards but man I can shoot at that range. I
just completely lost my composure and blew the shots. Thankfully
however I did not wound them instead which somehow could have made things even worse. Also I had so many close calls on nice
bulls that somehow I did not get off a shot. How in the hell can you be in the middle of a herd and be able to literally shoot
everyone except the bull is mind boggling. One thing that made it
tough was that the herd bull was the only bull in all the herds
we seen, and they all had big herds. Some as big as 30 to 40 elk
with 1 bull and a few spikes. Would have been glad to have a chance at the smaller bulls on the edge of the herd. Oh did I say
one of the bulls I missed was in the 340 to 350 range?
Then My partner received some bad news at home and had to leave
after 4 days. This left me on my own for the last 4 1/2 days of
the hunt. I hunted for 2 days and actually had 3 close calls with
one again shaking my head on how I did not kill that bull and
yet no shot. With my mind completely shatterd and the thought of
the long drive home I decided to pull out early. I know someday
I will really regret this but I felt I needed to get out.
With all this being said what a great unit, state and to be able
to experience first hand the greatest animal in the world close
up is something I will never forget. I did not go into this hunt
thinking I would kill a elk for sure, so not getting a elk is not
the deal. It's how in the hell I did not come home with a trophy
elk after all my chances? I'm really questioning myself as a
hunter big time.
I would like to thank everyone who had helped me out with emails, pm!s and even phone calls. Special thanks to bulldog
and I'm sorry you really deserved to be in on a kill. Thanks
again guys unfortunately I will never be back but wish you
guys the best of luck with your hunts now and in the future.

Pat

I had similar luck. I was into bulls everyday in 5BS and couldn't close the deal. I had a couple of great bulls at less than 50 yds and another at 25. Something always happened......cow busted me, wind changed, tree limb in the way etc. Had planned to hunt the whole hunt if needed but pulled out last Saturday. My wife fell in the rocks and busted up her knee and I tore out the front end of my Rhino. It was time to call it a hunt as bad as I hated it.

Sometimes it just isn't meant to happen. Maybe you will get lucky and draw at least once more before you get too old to do it like it should be done.
