Another ? About Draw Odds On NDOW Web Site

I was on the Nevada web site the other day and I printed out some NR mule deer draw odds and harvest info. My question is, are they basing the draw odds on 0pts, if not does it say anywhere what pts they are basing the draw odds on. I was looking up the units dad and I applied for to see what the state had to say about our odds and they looked better than some of the other sites I have seen.

For example unit 81 was something like 1 in 40 or something like that.

I believe the draw odds your looking at are not based on points, rather successful applicants devided by first choice applicants. Not an accurate indication of your true draw odds, especially for units that are not commonly listed as a first choice (ex 101-108 early). The bonus point page gives you somewhat of a better idea.

Thank you, I couldn't figure that out. What am i looking for on the bonus point page, do they show draw odds there as well?

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Never mind I found what you were talking about and I thank you very much. Yes, that does change things a little.

There's no way to no the true draw odds in Nevada. Where your giving 5 choices to draw. I can tell you there ten times worse than you think. Garth Carter and on this website you can get odds on drawing Nevada, but I've spent a ton of time looking into it, and there 10 times worse than they say. I'll bet Nevada makes $25.000 dollars for every premium deer tag that's drawn. You have a much better chance gambling in the casino's than you do drawing a decent tag. Sorry for blowing off, I've got 10 nonresident points and it's never enough, each year I think maybe this year, and when you look at it, 11 points my odds will go up maybe 1 or 2 percent from 10 points. I'll be glad to finally draw, then I can quit giving the gambling state $142 a year.

I have to disagree with you, huntnrich. I don't believe the draw odds are as bad a you think. Hell, before I moved to Nevada I drew a NR antelope tag with no points...and there were only 2 tags available!!

Perhaps you need to look at some other units to hunt. There is more than one quality Muley unit in Nevada.

I have to agree with Raghorn. Some units are really tough but with 10 NR points you should be getting a tag.Put in for units with a few more tags & go have a good time!

Also if you are looking at unit 81 odds for last year they should be alot different than they will be this year. The season their ended nov.5 last year and this year it is a Dec. migration hunt, and with all the chatter I have been hearing I think that the odds will get a hole lot worse.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong with this. You take the number of pts. you have and multiply that by ten, that is how many times your name goes in the hat ( so to speak ). Then if your name is drawn they go down the list of unit choices if those units have tags left you draw, if they don't have tags left you don't draw.

Am I understanding this correctly, if not could someone please straighten me out.

Thank you,

You dont multiply the points by 10 you square your points 10=100
#s 9=81 etc i like this system it would be better if they gave half the permits to the guys with the max points but they dont everybody has a chance

Thank you, Nvbuck I appreciate the help. Now I just have to hope 7pts is enough.

As Nvbuck said they square the number of points that you have. In your case that would be 7X7= 49 total points. For every point you have you are assinged a random number between 1000 and 99 million, thats a heck of a lot of numbers. Then ONLY the lowest random number goes into the tag draw. So you have 49 chances to draw a low draw number but only one chance in the actual tag draw.
Hope that answeres your question.

I am against the NV system ever giving half of the tags to the applicants with max points. That sounds too much like Utah where you practically have to have max points to ever draw a tag, and then it is pretty much a once-in-a-lifetime hunt because it is near impossible to ever draw it again without max points. Nvbuck, I am guessing that you have max points for something in NV. The NV system is the fairest point system of all because it gives everyone a chance, new applicants as well as old.

I am a non-resident and put in for 111-113, is it just me or did the odds on this hunt go down substantialy from last year to this year, I always put in for the Early by the way.

Wes,

Yes I can honestly say now that I understand how it works. Now I need to either get more points, apply for easier to draw units or pray like heck that my number comes up.

Thank you,

I like Nevada's system but I like a lot of state's systems and they are all different. To me, Nevada is a bonus when I draw. I never count on it cause there is no guarentee.

The 161-164 early elk tag went to a 0 pointer a couple of years ago although several max pointers applied for it. Over 2,000 first choice apps for that hunt, most with lots of points and someone hit the lottery.
