I had my first archery cow tag last year, and had a blast.
I had the most luck either stalking and/or getting in front of moving groups of elk. Usually in the early morning or late evening. Get them coming & going from their feeding/bedding areas.... I had the best luck during a pouring rain one evening, as the weather covered my noise & scent quite well. Excellent stalking conditions! ;-)
Another thing that worked (except I blew a shot...) was posting-up on a trail or likely route in the mid-afternoon. Maybe catch them up early, or making an early move to water. I used a cow call (Hootchie) VERY sparingly here and there, and actually got a lone yearling cow to come-in to check me out...
I also have the 6A archery cow tag this year, but will mainly be 'scouting' during my archery hunt for my boy's junior cow hunt the following month. Should be a fun fall!
Good luck!
