Baiting Big Game

i don't know if you would technically call it baiting...but isn't it illegal in Utah? I'm talking hay,grain, salt licks, & water being fed to deer months before the hunts start?

OTHERWISE THERE ARE QUITE A FEW MASTER BAITERS AROUND THIS PLACE THAT KEEP CHUMMING US BACK!!!

I do beleive it is illegal to "purposely" chum in big game animals in Utah, but you can hunts pre existing salt licks set out for livestock.

Someone will chime in with the facts.

I may be wrong here, but as far as I know, there is no law/rule that is stated that prohibits the use of a salt licks, bait, etc...
 
I didn't think that it was illegal since the Utah Big Game Guidebook does not mention it under Prohibited Hunting Methods. However I just called the DWR Central Region office and they said the DWR has no restrictions against it but you will want to check with the Forest Service or BLM depending on where you plan to hunt because they may have restrictions against it.
 
You may want to be careful though, I have put stuff out in areas the deer have been coming into already, and had elk come and run the deer out.
 
I don't want to personally do it...I had some guy showing me pics and telling me he did it and I didn't think it was legal. Guess I was wrong!
 
Easy now girls and guys. Some people on here may have issues with this as this may be considered as unfair an unethical.
Shame on you for for even considering taking an animal like this. Just Kidding.
 
Hell i'm headed down to IFA right now and get some salt blocks to set out before saturday!!

Maybe i can find one of them big giant lolipops i see they use for whitetails back east! ;-)

I forgot about those things. Hunters will buy just about anything if they think it will help them bag the Big Un.

And yes, I also have some tree stands with some Deer Cain spread around them. I do not think it is illegal.

Doesnt seem like fair chase. Guess it's the girl in me! HA HA! To each his own as long as it's legal...
 
Welcom bowgirl i got a couple of hints watch out for d13r and dont piss of bowhuntswitharifle or bqh which ever you prefer i think they are one and the same. ;-) she doesnt play nice with others especially females!

Fishlake, do you have deer hit your Deer Co. Cain during the day? I have it in several different spots with trail camera's on them and everything comes in at night. The deer go crazy for the stuff but only at night. It's well off the beaten path too.

If you're planning on setting up a stand, you need to be stategic on where you place that stand. I wouldn't feel it's unethical to place a stand on a trail where you know the deer are traveling to get to water, a hay field, a bedding area etc... Even setting up directly over water or the corner of a hay field doesn't seem unethical to me. We all are using some sort of attractant to give us an advantage. Setting up over something that is not natural may also be a question of ethics. I don't seem to see a real problem with using attractants like a salt lick, but I also have never seen a real advantage to it either.

Actually a friend of mine that has a Fishlake Archery tag got the blow and put it in. In one location, it has only been brining in some deer and one real nice buck and one cow elk.

In another location it has been showing some NICE bulls, but like someone else said, it has only been close to dark when they are coming in.

Now for the blow for spidey..........that is only a SPECIAL mix!!!! LMAO!!!!

Bowgirl........d13r and Rackmaster is who you want to watch out for....the rest of us are pretty nice guys!!! Well, sometimes!!
 
Bowgirl... Welcome! Thick skin is a must, as I have learned. I play nice, I didn't realize TripleK was female till they said she was. So essencially, I don't play nice when others don't play nice. No problems here.

I just checked the rules again and it IS illegal in wilderness areas. At least it is in the Mount Naomi Wilderness Area.
 
It's legal to bait deer in Utah? There are some nice deer in Utah but personally I like to hunt wild deer!

Stump Licker Works Very Well, They Will Chow The Stump All The Way The Ground. Deer and Elk. O... Wait Don't Take My Word Since I Ever Bait! HeHeHe
 
We cant bait deer in Idaho but we can bait bear. I live on the boarder of Washington/Idaho and they can bait deer but not bear. As far as putting salt out we've found most deer and elk dont like farm salt blocks, dig your self a hole about 1 1/2 feet deep and 2 feet wide, poor in about 1/2 a 50 lbs bag of rock salt. Back fill the hole with a mixture of dirt and the other 1/2 the 50 lbs. After a rain or even if your water it you should have to beat the critters off with a stick. This to you might want to check with BLM, Forest service or what ever goverment agency that might have control over the area you are in. Alot of hunter I know dont hunt over this but use it to get good gamecam photos.

by the looks of it I would almost have to say that at least one of these women is a redhead....at least from my experience....never piss off the redheads! its scary.

We were deer hunting in Utah some years back. We went to town for dinner and got thrown out of the Legion Hall for dragging an ear of corn across the dance floor.....so, yes, I think baiting is illegal in Utah.
