i am gettig interested in calling bears and trying to call lions. my wife thinks i'm crazy. my question is - is a 357 mag good enough for a back up on bears. also what would be the best call. dyig rabbit or a fawn or cub call.

A 357 is plenty! I carry a .45, as for calling im not sure... the bears ive shot i just set up on a wallow and waited.

I've never shot a bear or lion w/ a .357, but wouldn't hesitate with the right load.

I shoot Buffalo Bore 180 gr hardcast lead flatnose out of my S&W Mod 27 6" barrel which gives me 1500 fps (actual chrono'd speed, not published) and 900 ft-lbs of energy. I've shot this load thru a 9" diameter live pine tree. Also, check out ammo from Doubletap and HSM, which provide some similar loadings.

Don't have any advice on the type of calls.

Good luck!
