I took the picture when we were turkey hunting the other night. The bird was gobbling and actually roosted about an hour earlier than they usually do which gave me light to get the shot. After we moved in and looked him over we realized that it was just a small jake with about a 2" beard. So instead of leaving him for the next morning's hunt because he's smaller than what we were looking for, I decided to take a chance to see if I could get the picture. The wind was blowing pretty hard so he couldn't have heard very well. I snuck in to the tree next to him and climbed up the tree very slowly from the opposite side.(fully camo'ed of course) You can tell that he got really nervous (the out-stretched neck) as I popped out into sight.
It illegal to shoot them from the roost as they are not so wary when in the trees, which with the conditions gave me the perfect opportunity to try and get the shot....
