Brother in law's first hunt

Gents,

My brother in law has finally decided its time to get behind the rifle and wants to do an OTC elk hunt this year, however since he's had this revelation a little late in the year I am trying to get him and myself up to speed on Colorado. I have been trying to help him along the way but I am not a Colorado resident and have no experience with any hunting in Colorado. I have been learning as much as I can to try and assist but I thought I would reach out to the Colorado guys here and ask what would you do in terms of unit choice and general advice for your first hunt up there. He is a resident of Colorado and active military (I include that as I am not aware of any veteran or military preference the game and fish commission might have, and not to sway anyone's opinion or gain any favor) however he's not at Carson.

If possible, I would recommend a private land trespass hunt if you can afford it. Better chances of actually seeing/ connecting on elk. Can learn the ropes and maybe have some success. You can always just roll the dice and go public land, but odds are long. Chances are you will just see some great country and come home with only memories and pics. But that isn’t all that bad either.
