All - we recently bought some property in the Chiwawa unit, so I'm planning to start focusing my deer hunting in the general area. I haven't hunted anywhere in the neighborhood since I was about 14 - we hunted Mud Creek a few years in the late 80's, and that's about the extent of my hunting knowledge of the area. Ever since, I've been hunting the Okanogan and the Palouse. I understand that a lot of the deer spend their summers in the high country of Chiwawa/Chelan, and migrate down the Entiat to winter near the Columbia...but other than that, I don't know much about hunting the area.
Well, I'm trying to get my scouting started so I know what I'm doing by the end of the summer. Today was my first day of true scouting...or at least of driving roads to explore the area. Several of the roads up into the mtns. haven't been cleared yet, so our options were limited. Ultimately we drove out Eagle Creek up towards Chumstick Mtn. Pretty dense stuff, and then we ran into some serious mud that we white-knuckled back out of. Probably still too early to be up that high! Then we came back down and went out Van Creek up to French Corral. Better roads, but still pretty dense cover.
I know a number of you hunt the Swakane/Entiat area for deer. Am I in the right neighborhood to intercept the migration? Or do they drop off the ridge into the bottom of the Entiat valley? Is this place a zoo during the season? I prefer to spot and stalk if possible...any areas with more open terrain than what I drove today? I've seen pics and heard stories of open glassing country...certainly not where I was today.
I've got the multi season deer permit, so I'm planning to archery hunt mainly, but will probably be up there for the general rifle hunt too. Depending on where the deer are in September, I was also thinking about the high buck hunt. I don't need anyone's favorite place...just trying to get some general information so I can learn the area, focus my scouting, and have a game plan by the time September rolls around. Send me a PM if you like...would be happy to trade notes of what I find. Thanks in advance.
