Hey guys just thought I would post my Colorado 2nd season buck. I got him on the last day. My buddy from MT hunted with me for the first 5 days then had to go home, so I was solo to close it out. We were seeing lots of deer just not many bucks, and the ones we did see were not very big, besides a monster I saw but messed up on. Okay, we have all been there right? Trust me that deer still haunts me.
Long story short after hunting hard for 8 days I gave up on the big buck I messed up on, and decided to try a different spot the last morning.
As the sun was just coming up the morning of the last day I was glassing the top of a ridge and could see two deer moving and feeding along. They were a long ways off and I told myself those have to be bucks as they were side by side and moving at a fast pace. So off I went, up the hill as fast as I could, to some pinions where I could glass and catch back up to them.
After all that it turned out to be just a top filled with scattered does. Defeated, tired, and ready to go home. I started my way out and for some reason like we all do, I just kept glassing across from me in the thick pinions and openings. I was seeing deer here and there, then found my buck facing away from me feeding on a pinion. After getting as close as I could (I lost him several times in the the thick pinions) and I was sure he bedded down. It was now about 8:30 and the sun was fully up.
I just knew I had lost him when all the sudden about 5 minutes later there he was in a little opening feeding on bitter brush. I was a long way from him but could not get any closer because of the pinions he was in. I took the shot and did not see anything after. I kept glassing but I never saw him run, drop, or anything. I walked over to see what had happened and there he was piled up in the bush he was eating on. He's a 3x6, with lots of mass and great eye guards. I estimate him to be a 6-8 yr old deer.
I am very thankful and blessed to get such a beautiful animal. He sure made the long drive back to Oregon a lot more tolerable
Have a safe and Merry Christmas everyone!
