I am a non-resident and have been building point for deer and elk in Colorado and several other states. I live in north Idaho, and hunt on great OTC archery elk tags, and decent OTC any weapon deer tags at home every year. However if I want to hunt mule deer I have to travel quite a ways south, which I cant afford to do every year.
My out-of-state points strategy has been to apply for the best hunts in multiple states, and only go when I got lucky enough to draw something truly special. I do not have very much money, I can not afford a guide or to make multiple scouting trips. At best I would be able to show up 3-5 days prior to opening day for scouting and stay through the end of the season. Each tag I draw will most likely be a once-in-a-lifetime trip for me.
From what I have been reading about point creep in Colorado and how the draw system works I am wasting my time building points because I will never draw a truly premium tag in my lifetime. Everyone seems to be of the opinion that you should hunt easy to draw units repeatedly, but I can't afford to hunt out of state regularly like that.
With that being said, I have 7 points for deer and 7 for elk. If you were in my position would you continue to build points, and if so for how long? Or is there a unit(s) that would be worth using my points right now? I have been contemplating applying for deer unit 68 3rd rifle season, or deer unit 22 3rd rife season or deer unit 501 4th rifle season.
I have no idea on hunts within my point range for elk yet figuring I would get the deer out of the way first.
I welcome any and all suggestions and/or comments.
Thank you.
