Yes, he left a big wad, but that's not all he left per my other post.
FWIW, the public hunter didn't contribute to the conservation of the island itself, but he did leave $170* ($163 tag and $7 of the application fee) to the DWR and the other 1563* applicants left their $7 portion of the application fee ($10,941).
Like I said, it's not my cup of tea, but I don't have a problem with the hunts per se. I just think it's sad that we misplace our priorities sometimes (IMHO, of course) with some negative results. It's not something I would want to change, but I wouldn't want it to get any more influencial.

And you're right, the public hunt probably wouldn't have taken place without the auction tag, which, in and of itself, is a sad situation.
