Ok, I gotta vent a little. Maybe someone can answer this question for me or lend some insight into it.

I've been noticing alot of posts about tags that were drawn, but they guy that drew it, doesn't know d!ck about the unit they drew it in. Why on earth would someone put in for a tag inside a unit they know nothing about, then hurry and ask if anyone can help.
Makes more sense to me to do my research about the unit first depending on what critter I was going to hunt, then put in for the tag. Some people are just drawing tags in units they know NOTHING about, then want help.
I'm all for helping the next guy out, but do your research first. Don't expect people to jump over backwards to help when the tag holder doesn't even know the boundaries of the unit. And don't get all pissed off if no one says anything to help.
I appreciate help in units I am not overly familiar with, but at least I put in some time to research.
If you've done homework on a particular unit and it is one I am familiar with, I'll send a PM with information. Glad to help.
But other's.. help your selves and research, then ask for help.
Am I alone on this thought?

I put in for tags I know nothing about all the time. I know that the unit holds quality animals. After I draw the tag then I start to research the unit. I will do basic research, once I get the tag then I dive in a little more. I usually wait to get the tag before I do to much research. Since draw odds for most good tags are 2-8 percent chances.

I do it all the time too. I like to research units but come on, why spend hours upon hours researching a unit when your odds of drawing are terrible. i also get a lot more research done when i know i hold the tag and am pumped about it instead of it just being a dream!

i personally dont see anything wrong with it.

now if you draw a tag, there is a certain amount of research that you should be doing yourself and not just asking. ie looking at maps and knowing the unit boundaries, harvest stats etc.

yeah, there will always be those guys that want to just draw the tag and ask what drainage, its up to individuals if they want to volunteer that info.

I kind of take it on a case by case basis. It does bother me when someone asks for help on their very first post though. There is alot of knowledge on this web site and I think some guys want to take information rather than share.

Thats funny!! cuz in years past i tried to get info on units before the draw and guys were pissed that i was lookin for info on a unit that i probly would never draw. and now you're pissed that someone drew a hard unit and is lookin fo info. I dont get it.

Travis- I know of another guy that hunted 27 also. hope to talk to him this week! i'll email ya when i do

What do you think the purpose of this forum is? Maybe to share information so all of us can have better hunts? Just because someone asks for help doesn't mean they don't know d*ck. Don't you think asking a question here should be part of your research? Do you really think helping someone out is going to ruin your hunting?

Through years of the outdoors, I've learned I can actually take people straight to an animal, point it out, load the gun, put it in their hands, tell them to shoot, and still have them f it up. I don't know what you are so afraid of. If some one is truly clueless on a unit, they are not going to hurt your hunting very much no matter how much you help them.

I'll continue to ask questions and I'll continue to answer those others ask when I can help. Others here have been very helpful to me in the past, and I only hope I have more chances to repay them. I think half the fun of hunting is learning to hunt, learning the land, and the comraderie of those who are experts and those who are learning.

I said nothing about asking about information only on the HARD TO DRAW UNITS. I am talking any draw hunt or even General units. Makes more sense to me to research extensivley, then ask. Not the usual... "I drew unit #-. I know nothing of the unit.. help me" type of thing.
Just an observation. Don't get it twisted, I'm more than happy to help folks out, just as I would be greatful for help on units, but only having say 1-10 posts and asking for help with no research.. no way.

i pm'd a guy this spring that drew a bear tag in an area that i usually hunt. didnt sound like he knew much about the area and i did. i told him some spots that i knew would at least provide some sightings. he responded after his hunt...thanked me for all i provided and then proceeded to offer me any help he could in the future. made me feel pretty good. and now i have someone that is willing to help me out if i need it. thats how those things work. someone else did it for me awhile back...no questions asked. actually told me more than i expected and left their number in case i wanted to know more. now i knew a little bit from years past, but wanted a "refresher". i think its great people are willing to do that.

guess we all know not to "infringe" and ask you anything. have a great day.

I believe to maximize one's hunting time available, one SHOULD NOT spend tons of time researching a tag they have a 10% chance of drawing. With 5 kids and a wife, (that enjoys my company) I might only get 4 or 5 scouting trips in a year before season. There is no way I am going to use those up "pre-scouting" an area I might get a tag in once every ten years. I suppose if you have the type of job and family where you can scout across the country for 100 days a year, congrats.

On that same note, a person probably should at least be familiar with boundaries, success rates, deer numbers, etc. before they apply for a tag.., That is very much in their best interest. If they don't, and want to waste their draw opportunity, fine with me... more chance I'll draw the good tag I want.

Sharing info is what this site is all about. Everyone has to start somewhere. I had been hunting my entire life (33 yrs) when my city kid cousin decided to tag along a few years back. Some of his silly questions and ignorant hunting tactics nearly brought our party to our knees with laughter the first few years. Now, he is one of my best hunting buddies and a pretty decent hunter? Everyone starts somewhere? I say cut the newbies questions some slack.

I kinda see your point BB&B, but I put in for unfamiliar areas all the time.
If I feel like I'm just a part of this guy's research and he's not looking for a complete free ride, I'll help him. I'm ALWAYS talking to people about muledeer places. Most of the time we are exchanging info vis-a-vis and sometimes one of is doing all the asking.
I don't think your out of line by thinking the way you are because I've got the feeling a few guys are just being lazy and want a freeby. Mostly I think 90% of the guys are just trying to piece together their hunt.

I kind of thought thats what these kinds of sites were for, to share stories and insight on the tradition we so love, hunting. I do allot of research before and after the draws by visiting these sites. Heck I'm doing research right now!

What the heck have you been up to? I heard you sold DD feed. So what are you doing now with all of your free time. Hope all is well and good luck with the draws.

I have been silently watching these forums for the past 8 or 9 years and have observed the same lack of self-garnered knowledge from the individuals who visit this site. I do not disagree with people asking for help and direction, but when a person asks for help without first attempting to help themselves by putting in some serious time and effort then I feel that any adivice or information given is granted undeservingly.
When I first moved to Idaho in 1998 I spent most of that year getting to know the country I surmised would be potential hunting areas. I picked out my areas mainly by studying topo maps. I realize that some folks don't have a great amount of spare time to actually go out and scout potential areas, but that doesn't mean you can't break out some maps and locate decent looking habitat from there.
A great deal more pride and sense of accomplishment is felt when you harvest an animal through our own efforts and homework rather than letting someone else give you their hard earned knowledge. We live in an amazing state that encompasses a great deal of awesome habitat. Therefore it shouldn't be difficult to discover a hunting area of your own... My two cents...

Interesting opinions and topic. After reading the thread I would conclude the following,,,,,,,,,,

1- This is a hunting forum, people talk and exchange hunting information, stories, advice and opinions. Anything from what gun to buy. What kind of powder to use. Broadhead questions, etc. you get the point.

2- It is impossible to know every unit that some people put in for. Lots of guys put in for up to 7 or 8 states.

3- Some of the out of state units people put in for may be good one year and not so hot the next. You don't always know from year to year what unit you want to hunt. You sure as heck can't scout it all.

4- And finally come on here talk with others. Build some friendships and if you want to share your information with who you choose to. If you do not want to help out THEN DONT.

The great thing about America is that we hold firm to the idea that mankind has the inalieanable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

As for the occasional hunter who applies for tags in areas they have no knowledge of (or perhaps they have never even hunted before) is not something that should upset the "experienced" hunter. The day we turn the socialistic drawing process for controlled hunts we currently have into one that involves some mathematical formula to determine a hunters "worthiness", or involves a bidding system, is the day many average-Joe hunters will stop hunting.

This is a very interesting topic with many valid arguments.

For example, from a truly capitalistic point of view, what if we let the free market dictate who could hunt in controlled hunt units. In other words, why not initiate a bidding process for tags? For example, if the state of Idaho had a bidding process, a quality unit such as Unit 45 would yield the state an average of $4,000/tag (perhaps much more) * 50 tags = $200,000. The current drawing system only yields the State of Idaho $987.50.

A bidding system would generate considerably more revenue for Idaho than the current draw system. Avid hunters who live pay check to pay check (your typical construction employee for example) would probably be forced into bidding on only less productive units, or settle for general season hunts.

My point here is that those of us who are not capable of affording high tag prices should feel extremely fortunate to have the socialistic draw system currently employed by the State of Idaho and most other states for controlled hunts.

And to those hunters who just randomly apply to units for which they have no knowledge of I say ... "who cares?". More power to them.

rugram...I could not have said it an better myself. I've grown very tired of people bashing fellow hunters because they don't know a unit. Who gives a rat's a** whether they know it or not, they're making the effort by asking for help here.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that most people on this board have hunted units they knew nothing about, but went with a friend or guide who did. How is that any different than someone looking here for help.

It's not that big of a deal, friends...we're all hunters simply looking for opportunities.

I put in for areas that I have never hunted but first I look at draw odd percent kill and Quality. If I get the tag then I do start calling fish and game and go on the internet to see what I can find out about the place. Then I get to go hunt a place I have never been before look at new sights and have a great time with my buddies. I just retired and am going to hunt wyoming for the first time. How will you ever start hunting in different states if you dont put in for areas that you have never been before. I hope to hunt wyoming every other year just have to find a good place to hunt.

You know I agree a guy should do some of his own homework, and expecially knowing the unit bounderies. But with that said I wouldn't be on this site if no one shared information. This site is a huge part of my homework when I'm looking at a new area, draw tag, and even equipment. I love to get on this site to share stories and talk about hunts throughout the year. I have made some good friends on this site. But the best part about this site to me is the huge knowledge base that comes directly from HUNTERS.

My 2 cents.............
