How does the 1st and 2nd choice work for the draw - does my number come up and they look to see if my 1st choice is available and if not, then move onto my 2nd choice?

Thanks

You would draw a second choice only if it was undersubcribed, which is extremely unlikely. It is usually pointless to submit a second choice.

So then answer this qusetion. Last year I put in for an elk hunt as a first choice and my friend put in for the same hunt as a second choice, he drew the tag and I didn't. How does this work? And I always here of a few people every year drawing tags as second choices that I know are not undersubscribed.

It doesn't work.......I have NEVER heard of anyone drawing a LE elk tag as second choice. Not possible unless nobody put it as a first choice.

THuntin what happen is they drew your friends name looked at his choices, his first choice was already filled so they gave him his second choice. they simply just didn't draw your name. happens many times every year.

andyman, i drew my le elk tag this last year with my 2nd choice. i had panguitch muzzy as my first choice and ended up drawing my second choice paunsaugunt muzzy.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-21-10 AT 04:32PM (MST)[p]So If all your 1st choice tags are already gone they look at your second choice before they move to the next guy right? I just want to know if I should put in for the henry mtns for deer first choice incase I get lucky and the hunt I really intend on drawing for a second choice.

If you drew a LE elk tag as a 2nd choice one of 3 things have happened;
1). The tag you drew was undersubscribed (never happens with Le elk hunts in UT)
2). You accidentally put in for the wrong hunt and successfully drew it.
3). There was an error in the draw process.
I suspect #2.

Here is what the DWR sent me when I asked the question a couple weeks ago:

Russell,

In the limited entry applications individuals may select up to two choices. It is not required to have a second choice, but some individuals like to put one in. In the draw, all first choices are drawn first. If there are any remaining permits from the first choice drawing, a second choice drawing is done for those remaining permits from individuals who put in that area as their second choice and were unsuccessful with their first choice. Because of the number of applicants on the first choice drawing, we rarely do a second choice drawing because all of the permits are drawn with individuals first choices.

Last year you had the option to put up to two choices, a few years ago a person had the opportunity to select up to three choices in the limited entry draw. The once-in-a-lifetime draw an individual can only select one choice for the hunt number.

Thank you for contacting us!

In other words there is really only one choice is drawing for an LE tag.
