There are good deer throughout the unit but the best will not be found in the same locations year after year. My advice is to scout it hard and learn the terrain. Perhaps you will get lucky and find a good buck in a private location that no one else has seen. If others do know about it, then you can bet you will not have it to yourself and will probably never see it after the crowd shuffles into the woods on opening morning. To start, key on water in a location that is difficult to reach on foot. If you can drive there, forget it. Then explore travel routes into and out of oak patches or mountain mahogany. For me, I almost always hunt the very steep, hilly terrain that allows me to shoot across canyons. These may be found along the escarpment along the east side of the unit. Bass Hill has also been holding some very nice bucks this summer.
