Dunckley Pass Info

Hey all.... haven't posted anything in here for a while, but have a question. What is the area like around Dunckley Pass. Really rough? Just thinking about going there for a camping trip yet here in August, Might consider this area to bow hunt someday but nearing 70 Years old, maybe it's too rough and steep? Thanks

Great area for camping. If you decide to camp, make sure you get off the main road or you will be thoroughly dusted by the traffic. Hunting is tough and very crowded.

I live in the area and second that it is great for camping! Sheriff reservoir is great. Lots of camping on the access road. Mosquitos are plentiful through July. Lots of rain late this summer.. I haven't explored the west side of the pass: Vaughn lake to meeker...

I have not explored hunting options. I see lots of guys archery hunting elk and deer. So it will likely be crowded anywhere you go. Very heavy timber and miles of aspens. Probably lots of game but tough to glass, not much open area or opportunity to get above treeline. More of a "still hunt through trees" with close shots- good for bowhunting but not what I prefer.

Good luck. Be sure to stop at Montgomerys general store if you go through Yampa. Breakfast sausage they make is awesome!

Hunted there once , seen 50 thousand sheep or maybe more,. Pretty sure the local ranch drives off the adjacent national forest onto their ranch property. Didn't see much there and was a few other hunters saying the same thing....
