Does anybody know the rules as far what you can or can not cut for fire wood? Is anything dead fair game, or do you need any special permits? Thank you in advance.

Not sure what your question really is. If you are cutting wood for home heating---yes you need permits & each national forest has different rules. The San Jaun Forest here in SW Colorado is divided up into different areas & they all have different rules.

Now if you are talking about wood for your wall tent during elk season----no permit is need as far as I know. Any dead timber is fair game----with the exception on dead standing ponderosa pine---they like that as habitat for wildlife. I cut either aspen or spruce.

Yeah I should have specified that. I meant for the wall tent during elk season. I appreciate the advice, thats very helpful.
