You have 16 years of points towards an elk unit, your unit is currently on fire and there is a solid chance it will be still burning throughout the season. The DOW is giving the option to turn your tag back in to reinstate your points.

Negatives

Another year to wait to draw tag

Solid habitat is being burnt up resulting in added pressure to other areas throughout the unit (The unit got smaller)

Have a bear tag for the same unit

Positives

Turn elk tag in, hunt bears to learn the unit better

Burn area next year should hold elk. Hunters will be focused on it making other areas in the unit less crowded

Season next year ends a full week longer into September.

What say you?

Hunt bear, boots on the ground. Time in the mountains. It's all good.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-18 AT 06:36PM (MST)[p]For an elk tag, you're almost guaranteed to draw it next year, I would turn it in. Eat the bear tag this year.

R270 - Sheep tag is a totally different story, no guarantee for next year's draw. S50's trees burned, but now that the fire is out, just makes the sheep more visible, and I would hunt it. They didn't leave that mountain.

Have seen elk licking the burnt trees 3 days after a fire. Look at that monster bull killed this year in velvet with that Gov tag in another state. Notice the trees and the ground is even still black. Something to think about. Access is or can be a downfall but there will be elk in there.

I believe you're referring to the huge velvet bull shot a few weeks back in Arizona.....it was shot in the old Wallow Fire. However, that fire burned seven years ago (2011). But I agree, critters will move right back into a burn areas rather quickly if there's new growth.
