My father wants to hunt Colorado for cow elk this fall. He and I have hunted Colorado for elk (sometimes bull, sometimes cow) for a number of years and he has yet to connect.
Here?s the deal. He is approaching 80 years old and simply can't climb the hills any more. Every year he says during the hunt that this is the last time, he just can't do it any more ? then by late spring he is asking me where we are going elk hunting this year.
The honest truth is he really can't do it any more, but I love spending the week out hunting with him and will never have the chance again once he is gone, so?..I am scratching my head wondering what to do. Neither one of us have the money to spend on a private land hunt. I have come up with two possible options so far:
1) Try to find an area with leftover tags and a cow elk hunt that requires limited exertion (is there such a thing on public land?).
2) Go somewhere like Unit 21 where, when he needs a break from walking there are lots of roads to travel and the extra bonus of plenty of mule deer to look at to serve as a distraction. (Is there any decent elk hunting in Unit 21? I know there are usually left over cow tags.)
We have typically hunted the northwest part of the state in Unit 211 (south side of the Danforth Hills).
I am open to any suggestion you might have. Just want to have as many hunts as possible with the old man before he really does hang it up for good.

My hunting spot is so secret, not even the elk have found it yet.
