Humpback whale scare

While we were fishing in Alaska last week we saw a lot of humpback whales. One afternoon we were going back to the lodge when we see a pod of 7-8 whales about 1/2 mile in front of us. We pulled even with them and were about 200 yards away. They are huge. All of a sudden on the opposite side of the boat no more than 10' away they breached in a bubble feed...scared the heck out of us. We could see the herring jumping out of their mouths. Looked right in their eyes. You could put a VW beetle in their mouths and they stunk. They didn't hit the boat but they sure rocked it. It was the high light of the trip. DARN sea lions ~

My son got a very brief video...12-15 seconds right when they were going back down. They were the size of a rail car !

Close call. Whew!

I heard of a guy who was trolling with a down rigger for salmon here and a whale got tangled in his main line. It was about to pull the transom under when the down rigger ripped free. That's the only thing that saved him.

I had a buddy killed 20 years ago off Morro Bay when a whale breeched ontop his boat...in the fog....an unsinkable Davis boat......the pole holders were full of blubber.....
