Kidney stones

I had one surgically removed back when they cut you from stem to stern to extract it. That was long enough ago that I remember reading the story about the Burris buck in Outdoor Life while recovering in the hospital.
Much better methods these days!

I had one removed, sorta, in 1999 or so.

It started out as lower back pain which I attributed to working in the desert heat to drop some concrete for my shooting bench. I had gone to a local casino for breakfast and ended up bent over the seat of my truck, unable to climb in. Two cops called the bus, I got likkered up pretty good and made an appointment for the following week to have the stone vibrated into dust.

Didn't work that way. Urologist woke me up wondering if I wanted to see the stone....in my drunken stupor, I realized the stone did not get beaten/vibrated in to dust. The doc had reached up my urethra into my bladder (where it had traveled) and yanked it out via mu urethra.

The darn thing was half the size of my little fingernail. And it came out my pee hole.

I pizzzed blood clots for nearly a week. Couldn't fly, couldn't sit, couldnt stand too good either.

For the OP....your doc may tell you to avoid some common calcium containing stomach aids, such as TUMS, as the calcium build up may facilitate more stones.

I'm a stone thrower every couple of years. Mostly flush out in a day or two. A couple required hospital visits, including adventure like feddoc's, but without the pre-removal alcohol. Twasn't fun.

I meant to imply that I got likkered up from the morphine given to me by EMS on the way to the hospital.

I have had them a couple times in the past... once on a unit 1 AZ elk hunt back in about 2001. Ended up at the little hospital between Pinetop and showlow where they put a few things in the IV and I was knocked out sleeping for about 4 hours. I had not slept the previous 2 nights from the pain. Woke up and went to the bathroom and peed through a strainer. 3 small stones came out (looked like 3 large grains of jagged sand). They wanted to life flight me home which I denied and had to sign 30 pieces of paper (liability waiver stuff). Went back to camp and got a good night sleep and killed my elk the next morning.

Thankfully I have passed them all by peeing them out.

Got a good tip from a retired Navy flight Doc who told me that in med school his roommate would get them often. He would take 5 ibuprofen and drink an 18 pack of keystone light and pass his every time. This method worked for me the second time I felt the pain coming on.

Do you remember the docs name?

I had kidney stones once. It hit me as I was driving to elk camp on a Sunday morning here in AZ. Spent the day in flagstaff hospital. Dr. told me they moved too far down already, and I am going to have to pass them myself, so I told him I want to go elk hunting, so I left. The next few days I experienced the worst pain in my life. They would hit two or three times a day but mostly in the middle of the night while in camp. Cold sweats where I would be soaking wet. I ended up passing it at about 7:00 in the morning on Thursday out in the field with elk bugling all around. A hunter came walking up to me within 3-4 minutes of me zipping up my pants and asked if I was ok because I looked like hell. No happy ending for me as I went home with a tag in my hand. This was 2010 or 11 and I haven't had any stones since. I try to drink a glass of water with real lemon juice in every morning. The acid in lemon is supposed to keep the stones from forming is what I have been told.

I've had three about 4 to 5 years apart, last one lasted 8 days. I now drink 25 ounces of water with 2 lemons added put through a citrus reamer.
Haven't had one in over 10 years.

Anyone have one removed I have a 16 mm currently
That sounds awful big to remove without going up through your Hissing Lizard and breaking it up in lots of pieces.

Had it done twice. Cost me a November hunt once. It's not to enjoyable but it's one of those things that you just gotta do what ya gotta do.

If there is a good time to deal with it at least it's now and not in the Fall!

5 different times. Three times passed them in ER. two times had to have surgical removed. Surgical removed is easy peeve when out, but getting that stent removed in doctors office is something else.

One was during the hunts and was passing blood 8 miles back in wyoming on a back pack deer hunt. That one was surgically removed once home. Sure glad it didn't pass on the mountain. It was the size of a kidney/black bean.

Yeah there gonna use shock waves to break it up only thing that sucks is my surgery is 2 weeks away 😩

That's a whopper, good luck.

To keep from getting more in the future, the doc told me to not eat almonds, strawberries, spinach or drink black tea.

i
I had 4 stones try to pass all at once. 2 came with flomax. 2 wouldn't pass, and it was 2 weeks of H3LL before they could get me in for lithotripsy. I had 2 women tell me they would rather give birth than pass a kidney stone.
Nobody volunteers for another kidney stone.

I hear ya this is my eighth one 2 had min the emergency room I’ve passed all but this one
i have probably had close to 20. First 2 were 4-5mm and I ended up in the ER. I was told that is as big as most people can pass. Most of the others were 2-3mm including a pair I had 5 miles back in the Sangres. Hydrocodone goes with me on my backcountry excursions. Those 2 I passed a couple days later in town. Oh yea, 16 mm is a trophy. I would have a ring or necklace made.

I didn't have one removed but did pass it on the last night before they were going to go up and take it out. I pissed blood for a week after.
They say that it is the closest a man will experience to having a baby.
The funny thing is when I got to the hospital all the wards were full except the Maternity ward so that is where they put me. I fit right in with all the women screaming in pain Lol
Good luck hopefully you pass it otherwise you piss like a cow on a flat rock and can't be too far from a bathroom for weeks

Hahahahaha thank you.

Glad it's out. Them stents can be uncomfortable. Had one that was no problem and another that sucked. Hurt everything I started to pee.

Kidney's are nothing to take for granted. They are one of the few of our organs that do not naturally repair. Proper hydration is key. As others have mentioned, low-sugar lemonade works for prevention in some cases.

Urethra stents usually pulled out via a string. No medication required.

Large stones like Muleman1 reported typically need surgery. Surgery often requires subcutaneous procedure. (Technical term for poking a hole in you.)

I trust Muleman1 is doing much better post procedure.

Unfortunately no it hurt like hell
I feel your pain. My first stone resulted in a stint. When it was time for it to come out, the doc said, we can take it out in my office. It's no big deal, it takes about 5 minutes. Well about 45 minutes later and still struggling to get hold of it. He then inserted a catheter to drain the bladder, then went back to work. It was brutal but he finally got hold of the stint and pulled it out. It took over a week for the bleeding to stop. Freaking moron!

What do you do to prevent them ?

What do you do to prevent them ?
The last one I had sent me to the emergency room, which was about two years ago. I passed it the next day but then I did some research and I started taking a supplement called " chanca piedra" about a year ago. It's supposed to break up the stones before they develop. So far so good.

My doctor has me drinking low sugar cranberry juice or now my wife has found me cranberry pills I have had no issues for years.
I don't know if you had a female or male doctor but I had a female doc and the last day before she released me from the hospital she came in had everyone leave pulled the drapes. She then pulled up my hospital gown and then get down there and just looked at my private parts....I had to address the elephant in the room and asked are you looking to see if I am Ok or If I'm Italian. My wife and son could hear through the curtain and were laughing but she said she could tell I was Italian...........LOL True story If she looked today I'm not sure she could tell if I ever was Italian.

Just had 2 surgically removed a couple of weeks ago. One was 11mm and one was 17mm. I also had one removed 7 years ago that was 15mm. The first time the pain was bad because I had no idea that I had a stone. I literally couldn't move and it was an ambulance ride from a wedding to the ER.

With these last stones the pain was the same as the first but because I knew what was causing it, I just manned up and took the pain. Weird that once you've experienced pain from something it is easier to take the second time. and the fact I knew what the cause was.

The first surgery I wouldn't allow them to put in a stent.
The second surgery he put one in. Getting it removed was the worst part of everything. If it happens again there will be no stent. The stent also hurts until its removed or, at least it did for me.

I also never took pain meds for this last go around. I hate pain meds.

Glad it's out. Them stents can be uncomfortable. Had one that was no problem and another that sucked. Hurt everything I started to pee.
I peed blood clots for 3 -4 days after mine got stuck in the bladder. Doc yanked it out my pee pee.

That looks painful! My dad used to get them from time to time, he was tougher than boiled owl **** and pain didn’t affect him at all but those kidney stones would shut him right down!
I’ve never had any and hope to hell I never do.

I would never wish kidney stoves on anybody. They will make you curl up in a ball and make your eyes water if not out right cry like a baby. 😭😓😰
