Knee Pain

Been having some knee pain around the knee caps lately. It's not terrible pain, just enough to make those longer hikes uncomfortable. After the hike my legs will stiffen up and get that "tight rubber band" feeling. I'm not old enough for my knees to give out. Anything natural I can do for this? I excersise regularly and I'm not caring any extra weight. Used to run a few miles every day, but now after a mile or so I get the feeling that my knees are going to give out . . .

Drugs are "natural" aren't they?

Might be a little arthritis. Ever hyperextend the knee?

I was on Prednisone twice a year for about 25 years and never had knee pain till I stopped.
Now I use "up to" 3200mg of Ibuprofen a cpl days before season, then daily while hunting.
You can try excersises but nothing ever worked for me but drugs. Mine are just "wore out" for lack of a better explanation.

Try taking glucosamine. You can find it in the vitamins section. Read up on it. Its helped me.

Look into MSM, Glucosamine & Condroitine (sp?), it helps joints and flexability. For the worst pain I use Ibuprofin and DMSO. If you have torn miniscus you will need surgery.
Good luck, I have been through it...

+1 on glucosamine and chondroitin. You need to take it daily for 30-60 days though before it works. After that good as new, just take it with your vitamins.

I have had torn meniscus, and that doesn't sound like your problem, I doubt glucosamine will help but it wouldn't hurt, maybe its tendonitis, try soaking in the tub and stretching you could also find a phyicial therapist, a few sessions shouldn't cost very much, other wise a trip to a specialist would probably be wise.

Pills may help relive the pain, but won't help the long term problem. I have suffered from knee pain since I retired from playing football.

My pain is located in the center of my knee cap. It is caused by my qauds not tracking properly and undo strain placed on the qaudricep tendon. Before any of my backpack hunts, I train for 12 weeks to get my quads strong enough for my knee to hold up.

If interested send me a pm and I can give you some excercises to try and some to avoid at all costs with knee pain.

If the pain is just below the knee cap then its the tendon ... I had this problem and was told to get on a bike and do a little at a time until the tendon strengthens. It worked great and never had the problem again.

Visit a really good physical therapist. He or she can do an accurate diagnostic and set you up with the series of exercises that will set you up. If it needs more than that, they should refer you in the right direction. You could be dealing with bursitis, tendinitis, or any number of other things. The source of the problem could be in the feet as well with resulting pains often showing up in knees and/or hips. Hands on diagnostics by a professional may save you months of hit and miss trouble shooting.

MSM, Glucosamine & Condroitine
It works wonders for me. I know they say to take it for a month or two for results, but I can feel the difference in 2-3 days.
I take it for a week whenever I need, plus I start a month before any hunt that will include serious hiking.
I have friends that say it doesn't do anything.

sounds like what I have.

Petella Femoral Syndrome. Just that your leg mussels, either the quad or hammi are out of wack in strenght. I get it all the time and it is cured by stretching. Not just stretching in the morning before a hunt or hike, but a good stretching program for a few months.

Ibuprofen will help, as it is an inflmation that is causing the pain. but it will not cure it.

Mine will progress to lower back pain as well.

Can you tounch your toes easy? Can you lie flat on you back with you leg under you? IF not then my bet is that is the problem.

you need to go see somebody so at least you know what the problem is.

Mine was ITB. Pain on the outboard side of the knee and flares up when going downhill. Hurts like he!!.

i agree on the "go have someone check it out"

problem is, in that little kneecap, TONS of things can go wrong. people are giving great advise, but you just cant know if it's the same as yours. let someone who can tell you for sure tell you what to do. sometimes a quik cortizone (sp??)or steroid shot will solve it. but let a knee doc tell you.

i have a few issues with my lower back, and you should hear all the advise i get:)

I will throw in my tib bit of advice. my brother is a Athletic Trainer and I was having knee issues similar to what you described and he said I had torn meniscus. Told me that it would not get better and that I needed to keep on doing low impact workouts and the pain should stay manageable. This was 7 years ago. I still feel a bit of pain but as long as I walk I am ok. he said surgery was the only way to fix it.

Start road hunting. I don't like running into anyone while I am way out there on a stalk.

Rub some dirt on it, ya sissy!

Thanks for all the suggestions. Definitely agree that professional advice is best, but I figured some of you guys had similar issues. I used to hike regularly, as in a few times per week every year in addition to various hunting trips. The last year or so I havn't been able to do that much hiking. I'm thinking that maybe my legs aren't used to the strain. As well, I walk with my toes pointed outward (my buddies find it humorous to follow my "peguin tracks") so maybe that has something to do with the knee pain. At any rate, it's not to the point where I can't handle the pain, it's just something nagging that I hope can be fixed . . .

I had pain in my right kneecap for years (20) with about the same symptoms. Total knee replacement was the remedy. BTW I am 52. Good luck and go see a doc and see what's wrong.

There's a place in Ely,Nev. called the Green Lantern.Go in there and they will fix you up.When you first walk out you'll be noodle legged for about 5 minutes, then you'll be ok for a month or two.If you time it right you can go back a couple times before huntn season.

Good Luck,
Jim

You don't have to be the best, just good
as the best,forget the rest.

Sounds like patellofemoral syndrome. I would work on strengthen your quads (straight leg raises) and a short course of ibuprofen or aleve (5 days). If this does not seem to resolve the issue, a shot of cortisone may be in your future.

You must have good boots with good support and I had to get custom orthotics to align my gait better. Without the orthotics I cant walk or hike 20 minutes without my knee blowing up in pain. Go see a good podiatrist that specializes in custom (not over the counter) orthotics. Cost me about $250 and they last about 3 years

I can't say for sure what your pain might be from , but I can tall you that 6 yrs. back i had a torn menescus repaired. The pain I had before the repair was somewhat like you describe having. The more stress I put on the knee the more it hurt and swelled. Finally had it repaired ad at that time the Dr. said he was sure that I would need a total knee replacement with in 5 years. He was right had that surgery on Dec. 12th 09 The pain is now completely gone.

I would say go to the Dr. take a copuple of xrays and that will tell you what you need to do. If surgery is in order I recommend doing it sooner than later. I myself couldnt be happier with the results of mine. In fact Im satisfied enough with it that I plan on a Colorado hunt this year in the high country unit 77

My knees wore out at an early age (OA at 30). If the doc determines a similar condition, ask about synvisc injections. I've been getting them every 6 months for a couple years now and they seem to help. My knees are "loose" thanks to the missing material between the bones and I get alot of aggravation (especially when going downhill) since "loose" tendons constantly get yanked every which way. Im also trying to beef my quads back up to tighten all those loose bits. Custom fitted sport braces help as well, but I look like Forest Gump when I'm running. Works though.
