Little town. Very boring unless your into hunting, fishing and drinking. Lots of whitetail deer around. You'll probably run one over before you shoot one. Beartooth mountains are to the south and Bulls, Snowies and Pryors are north and southeast. If I had made my money elsewhere and wanted to live in Montana, this would be a good choice. If I had to make a living with work, this area is not so great.

I once was driving across I-90 and the driving conditions got bad I bailed off the interstate on the Columbus exit. I sat there at the bar/ casino (Dimondlil's) for about 6 hours while waiting on things to improve. I won a fair amount of change there that day. After I arrived at my destination in the Kalispell Mt. area I told the story as to the money I had won and why I was there in Columbus in the first palce. I was told by a few different folks that the weather always sucked there. It seems it's a cold hole and catches alot of wind and snow. Other than that I don't know a damned thing about the place.

PS: I hope you find this information of much value and put it to good use. If I can be of any more assistance feel free to ask.

Thanks a bunch Im gonna have to go up there and take a look see for myself, I'll be retired by the time I get there. Retired from my first job and maybe Ill do something to supplement the retirement checks.

Bugler, I was tooling around MT a few weeks ago. I really liked the Kalispell/Whitefish area and the area around Bozeman....................Stan

Taq....did you go to that bar with all the mounts? Probably, seeing how there is only one of everything there.:) Pretty neat little bar, mounts are kinda old, but still cool.

Nope. I just did the diamond lil' casino won 1600.00 bucks at their silly keno and poker machines and jumped back on I-90 and headed for home in Kalispell. Ahd Speaking of the Greater Kalispell/Whitefish area, I just sold my residence there. It was home for 24 years, Now half the state of Califoria moved in and they chased me up here to Alaska. The Flathead is no small town dream any more.

What ever you do please draw a line from Billings to Havre and only consider living West of that Line. I wouldn't recommend anyone from Arizona attempt to exist east of that line.

Im guessing because Im used to the rather warm waether we have here. I am wanting a change. I can't stand the heat and am looking for a place where I can still hunt and not be bothered too much by people who don't or want to change the way we do it.
Anyways. Thanks for the info.

I Think the areas mentioned by AZ402 are the best for anyone who wants to move to Montana and still have all the conviences of a larger town. I just hope everyone keeps thinking that way and continue to crowd into the Gallatin and Bitterroot Valleys.

I am content with the mosqitos, cold and heat and everything else out here on the eastern plains. I hope this area never gets very attractive to more people. It sucks out here, hunting is bad and people very unfriendly.

taq,

i bet you made out like a bandit on your place near kalispell after owning it for 24 years...your retirement fund is probably looking pretty flush right now, congrats!

nemont,

you are funny! if i was independently wealthy, and could find the right drug to blind my wife to the cons of eastern montana living, i'd be headed your way in a heartbeat :)

NeMont, I hear you. I am a NATIVE and presently live (and grew up here) in the Bitteroot. My family has also been in the Shelby area (where I was born) forever. If I could draw a line, it would be around the whole state. I guess a good thing can't be a secret forever. I'm in for area 622(CMR), know anything? mtmuley

LAST EDITED ON Jul-26-04 AT 09:49AM (MST)[p]mtmuley,

I hope you draw. We have had above normal precipe for year. I was not down to 622 but just went to scout 631 over the weekend.

Went 60 miles south of Glasgow, all the way to the Bone Trail boat ramp. We saw lots of elk, lots of deer and a few antelope. Saw one bull that would break 330 but no real monsters but then again it was kind of a speed trip.

I am a native as well and really don't mind out of state people moving here. What kills me is many move to Montana and then grip, ##### and moan that it is not like the big city. Why come here if that is your attitude?

When I was in college I used to work at a feedlot near Three Forks on the weekends. A guy from another state that begins with Ca. built a big house on his 60 acres "ranch" next door. Well when the calves would come in they would bawl all night long. This guy called the sheriff at least 20 times to demand that we workers had to make the calves be quiet during the hours of darkness. Unfortunately, that kind of knowledge, attitude and lack of understanding rural Montana is too prevalent with a lot of transplants.

Now to be fair I have met many, many quality people who love and respect this state, who are not necessarily natives but their heart is here.

NeMont, you and I are on the same page. Come here if you want, but don't try to change us or our lifestyle. Actually, my living depends somewhat on outastaters. But, I can only tolerate the ones that appreciate Montana for what it is and not what they would like it to be. I hope if I draw out, we can exchange some info. If ever you are in the Bitteroot or are hunting here, feel free to let me know. mtmuley
