LAST EDITED ON Nov-19-08 AT 09:03AM (MST)[p]Has anyone hunted elk or deer in the Mt Zirkel Wilderness? I am planning a early high country deer hunt there and a cow elk muzzy hunt for 2009.How is the population?Did they have a bad winter kill in this area?

The population in the area should be good. Winter kill shouldn't be much of a problem as the snowpack up there this year has been average.

You should be able to find big bucks, but youi'll have to search hard. They seem to stay spread out until snow starts pushing them down. The elk should be in the area as well.

The snowpack was just average this year and it was warm in February. That will help with survival of the ones that are left after last winter when they broke a 100 year snowfall record.

If you are into trivia: Where is the snowiest place in Colorado? Most would answer Wolf Creek Pass but they would be wrong. Buffalo Pass on the south edge of the Mt Zirkel Wilderness has the highest average snowfall in Colorado (according to NRCS snow survey sites) at slightly over 60" of precip annually. Wolf Creek doesn't make the top three.

I hunted around Walden a few years ago. The guy who owned the hotel in town said he has snow mobiled buffalo pass in july
