After attending an open forum put on by the DWR in regards to deer numbers in SE Utah and specifically on the Elk Ridge LE unit, I do not have any direct quotes but my understanding taken from this forum was that the DWR didn't feel that the bear population was large enough to hurt our deer population and that they felt that bears only killed deer when they were newborn fawns, well here is undisputed proof that bears kill more than just young newborn fawns. The Elk Ridge unit used to be one of the best units in the state, but with the number of predators we have in our part of Utah, I am afraid the deer numbers will never increase without a drastic predator control program. I don't want to see all predators gone but I would rather see deer on the Elk Ridge how it used to be when I was a kid.
