Well, If you read my other Muley post, you know why I showed up in this area again in 2015. I took my buddy Sam up there; and we had a blast just looking around. New country is my adventure; and I went farther in this year than before. The weather was pretty good, when we drove the 4 wheelers out the first evening, I saw a wolverine from 5 feet away in the dark! Kinda freaked me out, they are well able to rip into anything or anyone!
By the way, I did out in for some awesome hunts in 2015, drew for Antelope, (see my story in general hunting) but did not draw out for deer so I was happy to go back up to the steep country!
Anyway, before the wolverine...I got up on a rock and just waited.
Soon, I saw deer moving from my left to the right. First , a doe, then a nice big fat buck! I had a 4x Leupold scope , and it was a dang long ways, really steep down hill. I line up on the buck, BOOM, the dust cloud was just above his back, beacause I forgot to shoot low because of the downhill angle.
The buck made it into the trees, and I knew what to do if he showed himself again. A 125 yards to the right; a buck stepped out in an opening,
I adjusted for the downhill by aiming at the lower edge of his body right behind his shoulder. BOOM! I looked and he was all squatted up and looking hurt bad. I noticed some hunters had come up and watched mu hunt from a much better view than I had, found out later that they could see all the deer but knew I was on them and left them alone. How many times does that happen?? Anyway I gathered all my possibles and took off down that steep face, only to realize that I had lost the opening!! Only thing to do? run back up to the top and get lined up again!!
My heart was a chuggin somethin awful but I got on the way back down there. Sammy had checked with the other hunters, and dropped down into position to help me find the buck. I could not see Sammy but I could hear him, he pooped a shot off and finished the buck off about the same time I saw him jump. I had by back really cramping up bad from running up that hill... so had a worse time bending down to gut him out than I would like to admit. I have started a treadmill program to make sure I am more ready this fall.
We got out of there after "marking" the area and leaving my orange hat on his rack. We got backin there and packed him into two backpacks and hiked him out of that hole.
Sorry about the pictures being rotated, it does not mtter what I do, they are wrong!
