Well its been an amazing past 5 weeks...I had a archery Kaibab tag and left for the Kaibab on Aug 22 with my cousin Kenny and buddy Aaron. My little cousin Kenny was able to get it done on a very nice 4x4 for his 1st Archery buck!
I hunted through Sept 9, and although I didn't come away with a buck I had an amazing hunt and saw a few of the nicest bucks I have ever seen. Next year I'm gonna get my rebate
I came home a little early to focus on the elk hunt and boy were the bulls heating up! Opening morning we called in a nice 6x6 and my wife was able to get a shot. It was a front shot and she just missed, but was a fun start to the hunt anyways! We continued to get in them morning and night and I was just enjoying every second of sitting back and watching my wife sneak in and try to do her thing while I hung back and tried to lure the bulls in with some attractive cow calls!
One evening we had a calf bed down 20 yards from us just talked her head off! After about 20 minutes of it a nice 6x6 had enough and came in screaming, but when Lauren went to pull back the cow and calf spooked out and scared off the bull with them...
On wed evening my wife wasn't going to be home until 4:00 and decided she'd sit a tank in a hot spot we had been in lots of elk and a buddy and I headed out North to the PJ's to a spot I had killed my very first archery bull some 6 years ago and boy did it pay off! We had 5 cows and 2 spikes play around in the water for about 30 minutes before my bull came on in, and well like they say, "The rest is history!"
Lauren and I got on a monster the last evening, but needed another 5 minutes of light...Gotta love September in elk country!!
