My kids OIL Stallion Range Oryx

My 2 youngest kids drew their OIL Stallion Range oryx hunts and we were on them this weekend.

This is the first time I have ever hunted Stallion range and got a lot of advice and help from different people.

Like always Khart was there for the fun and all the hard work, nmyotebuster helped with a map and the spots they got into them, Chris at Compasswest outfitters got me a map and lots of ideas on where to hunt, my friends M&K (I dont think he wants me to mention his name) and their daughter actually took Zach and lastly if Gilbert Villegas ever offers you advice on a Oryx hunt I recommend you take it.

This is the first time I was ever on a OIL hunt and have never experienced nothing like it. 110 hunters set loose at one time.

The game plan was that myself, Khart, my wife would take Lauren (my 16yr old daughter) the first day and My friends M&K and their daughter would take Zach.

Lauren, only goes hunting to make me happy and wanted to get it over with asap.

One thing I got to say about Stallion is that there are lots of oryx. We were in them all day long.

First thing in the AM we got on a nice group. Lauren takes a long time to get a shot off and we needed to find an oryx that did not know we were there.

We got to within 320 yards of the first group, but, they never presented a real good shot before they trotted off. Immediately we were into another big group. We were about 200 yards away and getting ready to set up when we heard a shot and the oryx took off. We came out of the ravine we were in and 2 other groups of hunters showed up to the left and right of us.

Off we went. We made a great stalk on another group and came down on top of them from a hill. We were perfectly set up and Kevin watched from the 15x glasses from a distance.

Lauren to a nice relaxed shot at about 160 yards, we heard the thump and I knew we had a dead oryx. However, the group trotted off only about 30 yards and stood there. Nothing dropped, nothing acted hit. They wandered off. We found no dead oryx and no blood. We watched them for awhile until they got out of the area and none even lagged behind.

After we checked the area thoroughly for blood we moved on.

The rest of the morning presented no more shots, but, couple times a 300 yard plus shot could have been taken, but, they were not shots Lauren could take.

Meanwhile, Zach was with our friends and missed a large bull with really big bases first thing in the morning. He got a nice bull with one shot that morning and our friends packed it out. We caught up with them and got Zach checked out.

Gilbert gave us some ideas for the last few hours of the day and back we went.

BTW Gilbert is the perfect guy for heading up these White Sands hunts. He does a great job and is always available for questions and help before and during the hunt.

That afternoon, Lauren, Kevin and I hiked into an area and got into oryx 3 times and the Lauren took her second shot of the day and killed this nice cow. The shot was perfect going right through the middle of the heart.

I will post up Zach's pictures later.

Here is the picture of the heart of the Oryx Lauren shot. The bullet passed right through the center and exited out the other side. We were stalking through thick yuccas so it was real nice the cow only went about 15 yards.

Wow nice shot, Good looking horns.

BTW, that big sore on the bridge of her nose I thought was a fighting wound.

Zack skinned out the head tonight to do a european and it looks like it rotted from the inside out. Will make a funny skull mount.

Great looking Oryx. Congrats to your daughter Paul!

Heck of a shot too! But don't you guys know the heart tastes pretty good :D

Can't wait to see Zach's. Sounds like he got a nice one!

Congrats Lauren!

And congrats to you Paul. Nothing better than hunting with your kids.

I love the way those horns arch back.

Lauren was using a 270 with 140 grain bullet. Bullet passed through completely and took out the heart.

Zach was using a 300 win mag and it went through both shoulders (ruining alot of meat) and exited.

Lauren's went about 15 yards and Zachs I think went about 50.

This is both kids 2nd oryx. Previously they killed with a 7mm08 and a 270.

NMPaul,

Great! I am glad you, your kiddos, and friends had a awsome hunt. It's a good feeling to get it done early. Once the hunt is over, it's kind of bummer. Can't wait to see the the other pics. Congrats on a most memorable year in hunting for the NMPaul family. The new season does start now in April with turkeys. Good luck with that and on the rest of the hunt draws. Hopefully you guys will have the same type of success this coming year.

You are right, all the guys you have mentioned are great help with Oryx hunting insight at Stallion. Gilbert V. in particular is always very helpfull.
If possible could you share the hunt stats for this weekends hunt when you get them from Gilbert? I would really like to see them. Send them to my email [email protected].

Miguel,
How did you guys do on that hunt?
