No More Cabela's

After visiting the Cabela's in Boise several times, both before and after Christmas, I can now say that I am a Sportsman's Warehouse customer. I've never seen this level of apathy and incompetence in any retail store, which is surprising since I've had such great luck with the mail order side.

The final straw was the way my father was treated. I returned every gift we bought at Cabela's and took our business to SW.

> I can now
>say that I am a
>Sportsman's Warehouse customer.

You mean you are an Alberta Farmers Coop customer right? The entire Sportsmans Warehouse chain was reciently sold to AFC. Time will tell how that works out for people...

Sportsmans carries a few things Cabelas doesnt, generally has better prices but just as many idiots and morons work there as Cabelas, IMO they are even worse.

well since your here in the Boise area..you wont like Sportsmans...try to return anything!!! Their a-holes even if you have the reciept and they have just as many or more moron's who are really arrogent...... Will always go to Cabelas I've even returned a leupold rangefinder that I bought at Sports and they wouldnt take it back nothing wrong just didnt like how it worked....cabelas looked at it and took it back now questions asked.... best customer service that way no doubt

Pre64, had exact same scenario at Sports Warehouse and now prefer mail order Cabela's for all my shopping. Don't have to waste hours driving to either store and it arrives on my doorstep at work. I used to love shopping at SW but recently they have not had one item I was after and their customer service was horrible.

I went to buy an ice tent at cabelas a few weeks ago. It was listed
at $399.99. At the last minute, I decided to call Sportsmans and
check their price. They had the exact thing for $289.99.

What a joke. Service is usually bad at both places. I wish more
people with experience (who knew how to work), were hired.

Go to the optics department in Riverdale and you will know
What I mean. However, I will give credit to the older people
that work there. They have usually been good.

I guess the pay must be bad???????

My father had an issue with some credit and was passed off from employee to employee. I caught up with him at the customer service desk (This was his third line, and each time they made him start over). There were maybe 15 people in line and waiting for the one person at the desk. I counted 6 employees within bow range (recurve) doing nothing but talking to each other and apparetly this was the case all along. I had a small kid with me so I could only hang around for 20 minutes or so. 90 minutes was his limit, no sale.

I've had no issues with SW. As far as reloading items they've got more stuff anyway.

>Go to the optics department in
>Riverdale and you will know
>What I mean.

That's funny! I was just there yesterday and was way pissed off at the people there. They had no experience at all and I was actually going to buy a pair from them last night but decided not to because of the idiots that woked there. I'm doing my shopping online from now on.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-30-08 AT 06:20PM (MST)[p]Sportsmans in Riverdale doesnt even have any Hoppe's #9 and very little of anything else.

I think the Sportsmans Warehouse in Riverdale Utah is going out of business.... ammo is non-existant... shelves are bare... I even tried to buy a Mule Deer 2009 calendar for a gift like I do every year and they never ordered any.... totally sucked.

At least Cabela's has items on the shelves.

Unfortunatly, most of these stores have very few really knowledgeable staff.

The pay is low and almost everyone .....all you guys on here....have way more hands on experience than the best salesperson in those big stores.

It is just the way it is. I'm not sure how you could reasonably expect more.

When you need help, look for the guy with the most gray hair.....

You pretty much have to have done your homework before you go there and unless you actually want it NOW, you are better off shopping on line.

Cabela's has a great return policy on anything they have shipped you and you don't have to speak to the minimum wagers who work in the retail stores.....they put the least experienced people they have in returns and complaints.

Those retail outlets are simply "KMarts with camo......and a dead zoo".

you can find better prices on-line and free shipping is becoming a norm.
speaking of cabela's have anyone here seen a jump in the interest rate on your credit cards. my was hit for a 1% hike called the bank and was told all credit cards are being raised by 1% effective 01dec08, this is for purchases outside of the cabelas's store only. all store purchases are still at 9.9%

You would be correct if you said UFA United Farmers Assoc.
UFA is one of Canada?s most successful co-operatives.

i also prefer the warehouse over cabelas. mainly becuase it seems more people go to cabelas now, so the warehouse is easier to get in and out of. some of you sound like you expect some expert in the outdoors to always be able to answer your question.....dont forget that this is just a retail store...nothing more. havent you noticed that a large portion of the employees are young kids?? report their little a$$e$ if they arent doing their jobs!! i agree that customer service pretty much sucks at both places. it really doesnt phase me anymore because pretty much everywhere you go these days is like that. i just drink away the anger in the evenings:)

All of the Cabela's, Sportsman Warehouse etc. of a chain group get their hired help from local people willing to work. If they are not helping you or know what they are selling, you can't blame the Companies, it is the mentality of the ones available to hire.........that is the way I see it.

If your are looking for optics, and are near northern UT
pay a visit to kents marketplace in Tremonton. Dave and Jeff
Harrow are awesome. They sell Sworovski, vortex and a couple others. You cant beat there prices.

The story I saw had it as AFC... no big deal either way.

Love Cabalas

It is close
They have tons of crap and best of all. I haven't paid for anything in that store sense I got one of their credit cards. I use it for work and the points add up fast. I receive at least a 1,000 dollars of free stuff a year

Archery is a year round commitment!!

Bought a gun at Cabelas yesterday. I agree you have to have a lot of patients to buy a gun there. This is mainly due to the amount of people that also are in there looking for a gun.

There prices for the most part are a little higher than Sportsmans, but if you wait for the sales you can get a good deal. Also, I asked them if they would price match a gun at SW and they said they would if they had the exact same gun in stock (Which it wasn't).

Anyway I bought a Remington 700 ADL with a hard case and sling for $379.00 after taxes. That was after a $40.00 rebate and an additional $30.00 off of the sale price. Nobody else was even close to that.

As for the help, Sportsmans and Cabelas are about the same. Chances are someone there can help you. You just might have to find that person.

Also, has anyone tried to buy gun powder? I went to SW and Cabelas and they had absolutely nothing!

Have not had any problems with either store. I have returned everything I've wanted. I find better deals at Cabelas mainly sales. Sportsmans can't keep the hot items in stock. They have been out of ammo, bullets, powder, primers, and most anything to do with reloading for months. They are losing some serious cash. I just order it all from Cabelas online now. I hope SW stays in business.

My house burned down in august. i had to replace close to $20k in gear, so i have extensive experience with both stores in boise this year.
technically speaking, neither store has more than 1 or 2 employees that know their arse from a powder trickler.
As far as SW management is concerned, i went to managers of both stores and told them my situation. At SH I was told that their credit card generates more "points" and they would "work with me". At cabelas, the same thing, but they happened to have their grand opening sale going on where they sent out cards for spend $500, get $150 off. Everyone I knew had one of these cards so i asked the manager if i could collect them and he said yes. That promo alone almost completely paid for me to upgrade to the swaro 20-60HD.
Ive bounced back and forth between the two to find different things that one did or did not have and had to return many things to both stores. So far, SW has taken back everything i returned, but its taken an argument with the manager and the receipt every time and sometimes several trips to the store. Cabelas has taken back everything with no questions asked. the latest was the alaskan guide pack and frame. the frame is too light for hauling elk quarters and ive broken 2 now. this time i took it back just to exchange the frame, not the pack. I went and got the new replacement and it took 5 minutes to convince the guy at the counter that it was the same frame (might have been the blood stains on the 2month old one that threw him off). then, because the product numbers had changed, he was convinced that the prices had gone up. I was tired of him at this point and gave him a "whatever". so he exchanged the pack and gave me a gift card for $130. the difference between the frame alone price and the pack/frame combo. I was so ticked off at this point that i didn't say a word. This was the last bit of change i needed to upgrade to the swaro rifle scope. But of course, when i asked if they would mount the scope using loc tite, they said id have to do that myself.
Every single item i have ever purchased that was cabelas brand name has broken long before it should have. be it headlamp, binos, pack frames, or clothing...they are the WAL-Mart of sporting goods.
As far as reloading gear, neither store has had 300RUM brass for a month or two and sportsmans is nearly out of all powder, most bullets/brass. I ended up paying 2x the normal price at Cliffs just to get started.
wow...this rant got a little long winded...sorry. At any rate, my opinion is that the cabelas return policy makes them the lesser of two evils, but I stay away from anything with their brand name on it.

In my book Cabela's is good for three things:

1. The awesome taxidermy
2. Kids LOVE the fish tunnel
3. Fudge

I could care less about anything else in the store. I haven't bought anything but fudge at the place, I take all other business to Sportsman's.

As for customer service at any outdoor store I care little about the quality of advice I may or may not get or even the help for that matter. If I do need advice or help and I luckout and get good help, BONUS. Most times I have gotten tips/advice from family, friends or places like MM and know exactly what I want and where I want to buy it from.

I like Sportsman's because they have a lot of gear that is specific to western hunting so I can more times than not find what I want for a reasonable price.

+1 on the comment that with all the people in Cabela's there is less at the smaller stores.

My 2 cents

?Here?s to the hero's that Git-R-Done!!?

Sorry to hear about your burn out SteepNDeep. Hope the insurance company did right by you. I can't argue that Cabela's return policy is golden. Even so, thier apathy and incompetence outweighed the return policy.

The look on the clerk's face was pretty funny when I said I wanted to return the gift card.

i had a couple of those "spend $500 and get a $150 gift cards" and they expired on 12/29/08. it says right on the card they cant be redeemed for regular gift cards. i told the clerk that i was waiting for the new model 70 but it hasnt arrived yet. without hesitating she exchanged those 2 cards for a $300 gift card that does not expire. i thought that was pretty cool. i still prefer the warehouse though.

Bessy you like Basin sports. I can never get any freakin help in there. It sucks.
-Cody AKA BigBuck92

Totally agree with the comments about Sportsmans...

1. Can be a pain sometimes to return Merchandise even with a receipt

2. They do not seem to be able to keep the good stuff in stock

3. I gave up on the employees along time ago as far as their knowledge don't usually need to much help with the stuff I tend to buy the most anyway.

Cabelas though I have never had any issues but mostly mail rder from them lots of realoding stuff.

When I do shop there the best thing is returning stuff if needed is a lot smoother.

The Downside to their stores is that they do not offer the same stuff in stock like the mail order side.

Both Cabelas and Sportsmans will get my dollars any day over Gander Mountain and Bass Pro

LAST EDITED ON Jan-03-09 AT 02:43PM (MST)[p]I'll stick with Cabelas. I love there return policy. SW is a pain. After so many days they want to give you credit. I live a long way and visit when I go home for w weekend. Sometimes it over a couple months. I do not like the hassel. Plus the last time I visited they would not sell me a gun since I was from a visiting State. They told me it was corporate policy. My corporation says I will shop elsewhere from now on.

This fall I bought my son a pair of Browning boots. 3 months later they were coming apart. I called Cabelas and explained that I did not have a reciept or box. No problem bring them back and they pro rated them. We ended up getting in store credit for the full price that we paid. ( Lehi Cabelas ). I have always had good luck with Cabelas since it opened in Utah. My wife says it is like my second home. Sportsmans in Midvale is closer but I will drive the extra miles to go to Cabelas.

Just a little story about the Cabela's in KC. My dad was given a pair of Rocky boots for Christmas about three years ago and the soles on them started to come apart. My mom bought him a new pair this year that didn't fit him so he called and asked if I would drive him to the store. When I picked him up he had both pair of the boots in his hands. Make a long story short he returned the new pair argued with them that the old pair shouldn't have worn out so quickly. Since they no longer carried his three year old boots they told him to pick out a new pair. He picked out a $170.00 pair and took them to the front and they gave him a even exchange without even asking the price of the old ones. That's what good customer service is all about.

Im with you SW is the best, for walk in. Oder online with SW sucks bad, cabelas is still the best online oder

LAST EDITED ON Mar-05-09 AT 09:20AM (MST)[p]Sounds like there are just as many people happy with Cabelas and SW as there are that absolutely despise them. Hmmmmm.

I myself have worked in sports retail stores, and I honestly think some of you are expecting way too much. Maybe I'm out of touch, as I've never been to a Sportsman's Warehouse, or any of the Western Cabelas, but I'm pretty sure I've got an idea.

I for one worked at a Dicks Sporting Goods, don't know if you guys have them out near you, but they sell all sporting goods, I happenned to work in the outdoor section. Because of this, I had to cover everything outdoor related (Guns, bows, fishing, big lake, gps's, cameras, camping etc.) and people expect you to know EVERYTHING. I think I know quite a bit about hunting and fishing, but I don't reload, I don't own a bass boat, I don't fly-fish and I don't memorize ballistic charts. If you know what you are looking for I can help you find it, and if you have questions about a product, or need a recommendation I can probably help you out. I could help 99 people out of a hundred, but one person might have a question I can't answer and they are shocked.

It seems like quite a few of you have more experience than most, so why is it that when you don't know everything, you expect somebody working minimum wage at a retail store would? You guys seem to think experts should be around every corner just waiting to answer your most difficult questions. Guess what, there are some very good people working in retail, but not every former guide with 30 years of field experience or gun experts want to deal with the bullshit of retail for $8-10 per hour.

Also, I know some people are specialists in certain areas, which I think is a good thing. So when you see some guy standing around, maybe he honestly can't help you. If you are looking at a trolling motor, are you gonna ask a bow tech? I know for a fact that most guys at the gun counter aren't trained in handling your returns or operating a cash register, nor can every cashier give you a full refund on 3 year old boots. I've known a few people that would rather talk than help, but you can't paint them all in this light.

Sorry for the rant, I'm sure some of you have very legitimate gripes about these stores, but from the employee perspective, customers can be just as bad or worse.

+1 MIbuckhunter,
I realized that a few years ago and try my very best to respect the workers but my wife has NOT and I HATE going into a store with her when she raise's H#!! with them on returs. I feel bad for the unlucky person that gets her when she returns something.

Mntman

"Hunting is where you prove yourself"

the problem i have, which is not enough to keep me out of either store, is the gun counters. have you guys noticed how you have to wait...and wait...and wait to be helped. its INSANE. like you said, they arent all experts, so call in some freakin back up. when i go in, i have usually researched what i am looking for and just want someone to hand me a gun so i can go thru it. its hard to even get that at either store. even in the middle of the week. i just bought a tikka earlier this week. new what i wanted, called cabelas and verified it was in stock, and went to get it. took me an hour! not acceptable. but hey, what the hell is a guy to do. ##### here i guess and brush it off:)

You definately have some valid points. I will agree that you can't expect that much experience for $10.00 an hour.

However, when you go to SW and you are the only one at the counter, and the associate is either talking to 3 of his co-workers or sorting items on a shelf, (while you stand there)..... This is what I have a problem with.

You would think they would have the sense and see that a customer is standing there, needing help.

SW was bought out by a Canadian firm, so we will see what happens with them. The on here in ALBQ is stripped so hope they get shipments soon.

When I go to Cabela's I like the fact that they don't come up to you and hound dog you into buying something. When I need to talk to a sales rep. I go find one. Plus every time I have ever had to return anything they just say... no problem, it's 100% customer satisfaction, never a question.

I shop at both of them and have been treated fairly in both. Returns are much better at Cabela's but some of the things I've seen returned lately that will most likely be changing in the future. People are taking advantage of the system so in the end we'll lose it. Guys going hunting returning tent, clothing, shoes etc all muddy and a mess and laughing about it after they took it back. We get new stuff every year one of them said and these fools keep taking it back! My wife and I were appalled to see people abuse a system like that. There was over $4000.00 worth of used goods! I just wish they would have refused to take it back and then they would have been pissed! Cabela's will match prices with any retailer if it's in stock. Sportsman's down here has very little inventory and is still catching up from cash flow issues but they're hanging in there.

Boskee, I couldn't agree more about people out there that abuse the returns. Cabela's will take back a shiity dipper. That is a great return if you use it correctly. The staff at Cabela's is different at all the stores. I have had some that are great and others that needed fired on the spot. I do love the older people at Cabela's that have great knowledge. Price makes me mad at Cabela's they are always higher than Sportsman's. But they will match, I just think they should be lower to start with. And I never buy with out trying to get the price as low as they will go no matter where I buy.

I shop at both stores, however this past summer Sportmens in SLC was out of the most popular brands and line #s of fishing line! I kept going back to see if they ever got any in and they just spread all the other line they had out to make it look like they had line. But hey if you needed some 50# Big Game Trilene, they had plenty of that. They finally got some in Nov. They were out of fishing line for at least 4 months! WTF! BTW I ended up going to Cabelas and they had it all.

Both places have their problems, but it seems Sportsmens is always out of stock of the things I need.

I have the luxury of having a Cabela's store seven miles to the south of my house and a SW's about the same east of my house. There was another SW's in Goodyear, AZ that went OB last Oct or Nov.

I have found Cabela's is always higher priced on most items, but some are just a few cents. Powder at Cabela's isn't even close to SW, but you can't get it at either place anymore so that's moot. SW puts Winchester or CCI primers out in small bunches now, but seem to have a few boxes everytime I go in. The price for 100 count boxes of LG RFL MAG's has climbed from $1.99 to $2.19 to $2.99 to $3.19 in the past year, but I have managed to collect about 1,000 or so after several trips.

The SW gun section gives me the impression that they are goint the way of Sports Authority and dumping gun sales or they are slowly bleeding towards OB. I hope not, but it may happen.

Since the Obama dibacle, SW does not seem to want to stock any reloading suppies. Their brass bins are empty, primer rack a ghost town, low end bullets are non-existant (which is ok with me because I purchase Barnes or Nosler) and powder is gone even thought they still have the display bottles up.

My guess is they are trying to hang on with clothing and fishing sales, but I do not do much fishing anymore so I am not sure there. I really like both stores, but I am undecided if I really like a Cabela's store in my back yard. The online sales worked great, but now since they are here, I have to pay shipping AND tax. Before they opened here, I only had to pay shipping. I guess one way to beat that is the in-store pick-up, but I have not tried that yet.

264X300

264 If you go to cabela's and order an item in the store you don't pay shipping but you still have to pay tax. It takes a few days to get it in but that will save you a few $$ in the future.

My original gripe had nothing to do with price, return policy, or quality. It was a mis-managed store and indifference to customers, pre-Christmas. I don't mind when clerks are ignorant. But I cannot abide idiocy.

In Billings M.T. we have Sportsman Warehouse and Scheels.
Scheels has the same help for several years in most dept.
Very knowledgeable in guns and optics and will match all prices and they keep a good stock of high end optics andhigh end guns in stock. I did attend a GPS class at SW and very knowledgable
about GARMIN GPS and very friendly.Have had very good customer service at SCHEELS and SW. We will be getting CABELAS in a couple months so it will be interesting ,to have 3 stores competing for your business.

Completely agree on Scheels. Great place and has been for a lotta years. Are you sure Cabelas is coming into Billings? I heard it was put on hold till the financial things straighten out? Anybody hear anything more definite?

Too bad half the SW's are shutting down, maybe Cabelas can hire Chuck Adam's to string your bow. It's still a retail store have realistic expectations. How many of you guys would give up your hunting season for ten dollars an hour?

seems like everyone is getting tight shorts over a pretty minor thing. with today's world you can order from whoever you want. don't let a few low paid retail salesman dictate what you do. I've been to just about every major sporting goods store and they all have good qualities. for me, typically i go to scheels or cabelas.
