Hey guys and gals!
So I have been hunting for a few years now, and have filled my tags out near Danskin for the most part over those years. I don't have the best vision and contact lenses are not my friend. So the high dessert works well for me. I have been up towards Idaho City many times and have not seen a single critter. I am just not good at spotting them in the forest areas. Or I just have and untrained eye for them, not sure. Hell, they might be right there in front of me sometimes and I wouldn't even know it.
So, the wife and I are going to take a long drive tomorrow night (Monday 10/24/2016, hunting Tuesday), to get out of unit 39. Going for a place that has a better hunt ratio as per the F&G stats. Do any of you have any recommendations for areas to head to? I am thinking 3 hours at the most, and I know that it's kind of hard to say without scouting. But my wife is trying hunting for the first time this year on the F&G passport deal. And I would really like to try for something larger than a little 2x2.
Now don't get me wrong, I am not looking to bag anything to hang on my wall, I am 100% a meat hunter, but would like to step up my game a level and go for something a little bigger. Although, a big ol' Boone & Crocket buck would be cool too. But that's not the priority.
Also, I am without a spotting scope. And really dont want to waste money on a cheap crappy one. I would rather wait until I am in a position to by a nice Vortex Razor... Well, it wouldn't even have to be that nice. But I was wondering what you all would think of using a cheap craigslist telescope as a spotting scope? Have any of you ever tried such a thing? I'm sure folks have. Any thoughts on this crazy idea of mine?
So to recap, since I got a little wordy here: Looking for bigger bucks outside of 39, and if it's just plain stupid to think I could try to use a astrological telescope as a spotting scope?
