Not the number of Elk there used to be, too many wild horses and cattle that dominate the area. What elk there are usually stay on tribal land or the part of the refuge that is not open to hunting. They also restrict the hours you can access the refuge which makes it difficult to get in and get set up in time for best hunting hours. However there are a few hunters who have been successful. Be prepared to pack anything out the hard way. They won’t open any gates or roads so you can retrieve an animal, it’s all done on foot. Check in with the head Ranger if you decide to hunt it’s better to work with with them than otherwise.
