Pass through hole

I've got a fire rated liberty safe that doesn't have a pass through. I know punching a hole will somewhat diminish the fire rating but I only need a hole large enough to pass some 16-2 zip chord in for a heating rod. Also I figure the humidity risk is far greater than what I will lose in fire rating under the current circumstances.

Anyone done this? Any huge regrets or pitfalls to avoid? I've even thought of pinching some Tstat wire in the corner of the door...only needs to run 15 watts I worry if I do that I may pinch a wire and cause headaches with a short.

I've never worried much about a humidity rod before but the temps have been higher where it was before.

Or maybe try a reusable dessicant.

Heck ... I thought Elk had asked if you delivered a child ... OK my mind is clear ... you my man are posting a discussion ref Fire, heat and a Hole in a safe ( Safe or not, it could be anything ).

I shall not render a Math formula but my reply is darn near such.

First ... I mean the 1st thing anyone should ponder is HOW MUCH "POTENTIAL FUEL" is around + above such an object to be saved.

This COULD also apply to having a storm shelter in Tornado Alley.

Yes my Dear 1911, you can/could drill any size hole.

The REMEDY to such is cheap sheetrock or, heat resistant sheetrock.

In Home Depot it is termed: XP gypsum board also features a Type X core ... but if you do some research into COMMERCIAL Business offerings, you sure van find better.

But adhere to Best Practices so you never create a Mold environment.

Primers do not live well in such an environment ... Hench WWII in the Pacific + ages before, so, we got Crimped Bullet/Primer + Lacquer sealant at both spots...but such is another story.

As I try to keep this simple, I again refer to a Home Depot Product = 3M Fire Block Sealant FB 136 to seal interior construction voids around wires...

The Home Depot items are not the very best but they are so close to such... we should all grab such.

The Math aspect ( I refrain from, so Homer, My Bestest Buddy, is not upset at my azz ) :) is again, How much stored available Fuel is around and especially; ABOVE ( That which you desire to Protect ).

Even cheap sheetrock is light years better atop ( Sheets stacked ) and around front/side is better than zero.

I best stop due to you old farts skim reading and never remembering the last time you made a Post ( Gripes & Nagging & Insults well accepted ).

Jagerdad Your #90 TRANE specialist :) :) :)

1911 I would not worry about the fire rating for the safe. Most so called fire proof safes are only rated for anywhere between 1200 to 1800 degrees for a period of time of 30 to 45 minutes at the given temp on the safe.

A normal house fire will be over 2200 degrees to about 3000 degrees. There goes your guns in the safe. Just ask Kilowatt what happen to his guns in his gun safe. A total lost. I have seen guns from home fires on several occasions and none survived the fire inside the safe where they would be safe to shoot.

The best ones that came though, had charred wood, which indicated they suffered heat of over 400-500 degrees which would have damaged the heat treating of the steel and making the steel unsafe for high pressure rounds.

Put the rod in for rust protection. I also have a so called fire resistance gun safe, and I carry full replacement value on the guns inside that safe with my insurance company.

What size hole are you thinking you need to drill? The hole in my safe came just large enough to stick a lamp cord threw. Then you assemble the plug on the outside. Or the other way around. Push the cord in and hook it to the dehumidifier. I believe the ones made for safes come this way. Oh led lights inside are nice.

...as far as insurance on guns....all are covered for fire.....the low 2500 or 5000 dollar number are for theft......

As if you don't know Wiz. One hole is good as another. It's to run power to a dehumidifier rod.

The last time I was out there , there was so much profanity, and smoke I quickly shut the door and ran away !!!

Homer did you specify that the cord needed to be slammed not his finger ....hahaha

What's the need for a dehumidifier? The cold weather?

Liberty mini dehumidifier might work better for you? No drilling, etc., needed...Liberty Safes sell them.

Our weather is pretty mild here on the coast so we don't have to worry about that stuff.
