I got 7 so far, whitetail, bear, antelope, stone's sheep, canadian central barren ground caribou, mountain goat, and rocky mtn. elk. I need to pick between the bison and muskox. So make a suggestion. I understand there is a not so safe and a safer season for muskox. I would like the adventure of the muskox and I think they are neat critters. Bison has been very confusing for me. I am a member of SCI although I'd never hunt in a fence so I want to try to gather some info about good ways to hunt bison fair chase. I put in for the state bison draws. Ouch, might be glad I didn't draw AZ since it's kina pricey.
Also, I still need to add a moose and a mountain lion so I'm open to suggestions. Might want to rule out the Shiras for now. Bigger horns is better, right. Thanks in advance for the replies.

Look into this:

I've been told that Alberta has a free ranging herd of bison, north of Edmonton, way north, that are open season, as long as you book an outfitter, you're free to hunt them anytime. Same with wolves, I think. An Alberta outfitter can confirm or explain how it works. They say it's a hunt from hell and no guarantees. It's usually a winter hunt, due to muskeg and wetlands that are only accessible after freeze up and these bison do not come out of the bush so it's cut a track on a snow machine, then track them until one breaks cover.

Another solution might be to contact the Fish & Game departments from any State that has free ranging herds (Utah does, don't know about any others), and check to see if they offer any bison tags through a public auction system. If they do, ask which organization is offering the tag, and go to bidding. If they don't, try to convince them to offer one, if they think there are a group of interested bidders that will raise funding for bison improvement projects, they might issue one for auction.

Other than that I think you're going to have to just keep applying along with the rest of us poor boys and hope you get lucky.

Free ranging buffalo on t6he Sikanni Chief River in British Columbia, great mixed bag area elk, moose, stone sheep, goat, grizzly, wolves great area. Believe the outfitter in their now is Mike Hammett

I'd say you've done well thus far. The ONLY words of wisdom I can really offer have been given....gotta' think muskox costs more than bison. (Muskox have got to be more of a challenge, too.)

Within the shadows, go quietly.

Here's a few sites about the Alberta buffalo hunt. The first site listed claims there is not license required. Still not cheap in any since, if you hire help.

"LICENCE COSTS
No licence is required to hunt wild bison in Alberta, but hunters are encouraged to buy a wolf licence. Wolves may be taken at no extra charge on the hunt. Under Federal law, these bison are not considered ?pure? Wood Bison subspecies, and no CITES permit is required for export."
