Proposed Quotas for 2024 Big Game

Thanks for posting this, need to go back and take a look at my app. I saw right away a few cuts that will make me re arrange my choices.

Something is off on the 23 approved tags. Note the column totals.

They removed hunts, but they should have left the rows with hunts deleted or added in and had 0 in the appropriate column if trying to show differences between 23 approved and 24 recommended. The totals don't all match columns totals as in the document.

It’s a little disappointing they are proposing increases in deer tags again. I was in some of these units last year and how they are justifying more tags is beyond me. I started to have some hope last year when they reduced them in a bunch of units but so much for that.

and its been a big winter in most of the units with tag increases

So, only thing I’m finding this morning is the actual meeting on YouTube. You can access it by going to NDOW website and the link is at the top. Then you just have to scroll through to find what you’re looking for. Pretty good discussions on any legal weapon quota for mule deer especially considering Elko county at about the 3:40:00 point. Looks like they are reducing the tags again. I’d imagine they might post a list of what they went with at the first of the week before the deadline but you can get the info by going through this YouTube.

It was a little confusing. Elko CAB was wanting a 50% reduction of last years quotas but they ended up reducing this years recommendations by 35%. Some quotas will still be more than what they gave out, mostly on the primitive hunts.

It’s refreshing to see the commission vote against a lot of the proposed quotas from the mule deer biologist. I listened to a podcast with him the other day and his justification for increasing deer tags made no sense at all. I am certainly not a biologist but what that guy comes up with just doesn’t make sense. He needs to get out of his office more and actually go look at the landscape. I want to draw a deer tag but I would rather there be less tags with less of a chance to draw to give these deer a chance to come back.

Can you link the podcast? The Gohunt guys did a podcast with a biologist in Utah and it was super interesting and a lot of it was counterintuitive. He mentioned lower buck to doe ratios and being a good thing. I believe NDOW has a management goal of 30 bucks to 100 doe and this might be much too high according to the biologist in the podcast that Gohunt did. Big Hunt guys episode 111. It’s worth a listen.

The mule deer numbers were a mess. Very difficult to follow along with. Want to see them on paper as well.

Elk - approved as presented
Antelope - approved as presented
Bear approved as presented
bighorn - a few changes but nothing drastic for ram tags
Moose - approved as presented

All the enviros commenting on the bear quotas was concerning. Especially all the negative comments about using hounds. Hate seeing CA influence coming across the border on those items.

And the only public comment on the moose hunt was an anti hunter as well.

Basically they walked back a lot of the deer tag increases back to last year's numbers and decreased 6.7, and 10.

They should have this done and posted at least a week before tag deadlines. Doing these quota amendments 3 days before the deadline is retarded...but it is government.
