Questions about 300 H&H

Hello,
I recently inherited my Grandfather's 300 H&H rifle and wanted to get some expert information. It is an older rifle, I am guessing 50 years old, with only a few markings on the barrel. On the left side, is 300 H&H IMP and on the right side is RARA. No other info is on the gun. I also got a box of reloaded ammo 300 H&H Norma 180 grain and several 375 H&H cartridges. I want to make sure any ammo I purchase is the correct caliber. What does the IMP after the 300 H&H mean? Thanks for all your help.

it is most likely an "ackley" improved....and buying the exact ammo is not going to be possible. You can shoot factory 300 h&h through it and the cases will look different when extracted...they will be fire formed to the "improved" shape.....look at these 2 links...

Could also be a .300 Weatherby because Lots of guys rechambered .300 HH's to the "improved" Weatherby cartridge.

can you post a picture of it?

like said above. its probly an AI or weatherby. you can shoot factory 300 H&H thru either.

can you find some brass that has been shot thru the gun?

Thanks for the information. I will take pictures of the gun and current ammo that I have. I have not fired any ammo through the gun - yet. I will test my current 300 H&H loads and take pictures of cartridges before and after. It may take me a few days, but I will get it posted to get all of your advice.
