Region III December Junior's hunt deer recommendations

If you have kids who have ever applied or do apply for junior's only December muzzleloader deer tags in Region III then you'll be interested in this matter.

The Region is proposing in their deer package to take the December hunt, which is currently during the kid's Christmas break, and move it into a November (Thanksgiving) time frame.

I don't want to get into a pi$$ing match with the Region, but they refuse to accept there are "compelling reasons" why the hunt shouldn't be moved.

Many of us have written to them identifying why this hunt time frame should stay where it is. There are real school issues, athletic issues and family issues that prevent some kids from being able to hunt deer anytime but in late December.

There are no biological reasons, according to G&F to prevent this hunt from staying in December. It is as they say, "A social issue."

They are determined to go forward and present their recommendations to the Commission on April 18.

If you feel that they should leave this hunt open for those kids than can only go in December, then please comment to Region III Game Specialist Erin Riddering and Game Branch at [email protected] or [email protected].

I've posted this issue on Bowsite.com (Arizona) and Ms. Riddering posted in detail why G&F wants to do this. So in fairness, go there and read what she says.

Then either way you feel about this issue, write to her. I've been told that if comments are received, they will be seen by the Commissioners before their April 18 meeting.

G&F says this hunt is "outside their guidelines". It has been in the the same place for 15 years and never has caused a problem for the department before.

Why at a time when we and the department are trying to recruit and retain kids are we putting up any kind of "roadblocks" for the kids?

Don't we need to help every kid we can in keeping them in this sport?

The bottom line, despite the department's statements that there are "no compelling reasons to keep the hunt in this time frame" there are.

I wished they would recognize that.

Please get involved. In just 10 minutes, with one e-mail, YOU can help make a difference!

Thank you,

Don Martin

Thanks Travis!

Off to Phx, then coming to Alamo Lake over Easter. We need to get together, go fishing, tell lies and generally have a good time.

I've got some ideas I think you'll be interested in.
