Ringtail cats

I know, kind of out of the blue. A guy on an Oregon hunting forum got photos of one on his trail cam -- they are very rare here. Do you guys run into these fascinating critters from time to time? Looks like New Mexico is serious ringtail habitat.

We ran into 2 different ringtail cats last year hunting in 16c. Cool little characters!

Seen a few nearby & more down in the Gila. One of my favorite critters to watch.But not often.

I believe they are predominantly nocturnal. We used to trap them just south of Lamy which is south of Santa Few along 285. Beautiful little animals but not worth much as far as a pelt is concerned but, we trated them with some of the local pueblos so that they could use them in ceremonial dances.

The Wiki entry says they are pretty easy to to tame, so much so that miners in the Old West kept them to keep control mice and rats and they were nicknamed "Miners' Cats." Cool critters.

Both I saw last year were in the headlamp hiking out of a gnarly canyon. Giant glowing eyes at first!

Seen several locally as road kill in last couple years. Have only seen a couple in wild. They are nocturnal. If they are getting hit by cars, then they must be doing okay around here.

They were pests on my Ibex hunt in the Floridas's a few years back.. Yes they are cool critters.

Also had problems with them in the floridas. We camped at the top on an ibex hunt and had them raiding our food minutes after lights out. Got some game camera pictures. I've also seen one in the sandias.

Have seen them in Unit 10 and unit 51, Each time they was paired up or at least there was 2 of them together every time I have seen them.
