Just got back from 10 days refamiliarizing with the area I'll be guiding my son in for rifle bull in Northern AZ for his first elk hunt. I'm heading out over Labor day for 5 more days, and will get in a few more long weekends before the season, as well as the entire week before opening day the day after Thanksgiving. I'm planning on a long weekend immediately after rifle cow season to see if I can get a better idea what they're doing when pressured.
Given this schedule, what would be some good scouting strategy? Right now I'm trying to ignore the fact that I'm seeing very few elk (as I expect and hope that they'll be in the area after hunting pressure or snow pushes them down there) and am trying to concentrate on locating good early and late day glassing locations, and mid day still hunting locations.
Any advice for scouting tactics?
