Well guys, I finally did it. I arrowed my first archery deer this morning around 7:30 AM! I believe this was my 8th or 9th day hunting so far this year, and an opportunity came where I had the chance to stick a flop-ear and get that first archery deer under my belt!
The morning found us an hour late getting out of Wenatchee and when we came to our spot, it was foggy, raining, and about 34* F outside. We were driving/glassing the hills when around a corner I see a couple does trotting in the road. "Hell, I've hunted my ass off this year, I want to shoot a deer!" so I grab my bow and take off in pursuit!
The deer had rounded another corner in the road and evaded us up the hill. We snuck up a little knoll and I was within 10 yards but the deer had spotted me and began to move away. I top the crest and range the biggest doe at 35 yards (UpHill!). I hot my 30 yard pin at the top of the lungs and let 'er fly! I watch the white knock and fletches miss a couple inches low as I forgot to judge for uphill distance. The deer go trotting off over the crest of the hill and I kind of start laughing to myself at this situation. I go to knock another arrow, take a step and my arrow falls off the string. I literally started busting up laughing and my buddy was telling me to shut up and get ready cause the deer was just up ahead over the hill. I finally quiet down and off we go again!
Using some pines for some cover I snuck within 20 yards of the big doe again and waited a couple minutes for her to turn (it's a REAL different feeling sitting there only yards from a feeding deer knowing that you're about to take that deers life). She finally gave me a broadsite shot and I drew back, side stepped clear of the tree, settled my 20 yard pin right at the "point" of her shoulder and watch the arrow hit home! As soon as I shot I turned to my buddy with the biggest #####-eatin grin and told him that she was goin down! She went 50 yards and piled up about 50 yards uphill of the road! Double lunged her and barely missed the heart! My buddy is now hooked on archery after hunting with me this year. He's thinking about going archery next year. He claims he was more excited on this hunt that he has been on the last two bucks he's shot with a rifle!
Needless to say I am VERY pleased that I finally got a deer (last one was 5 years ago!) and now get to have some meat for the freezer. Hope you guys enjoyed the story!
