I'm starting to get psyched up again. My recovery from a cervical disk fusion is not going quite as planned, but I think I will try to punch my Unit 67 O2R tag. I was starting to contemplate returning the tag and keeping my points, so please talk me out of this brainfart. Haven't shot a rifle since the surgery and, frankly, am worried about shooting from the bench. Plan to go alpine hunting for blacktails this weekend with the kid, so I'll get a chance to see how it feels hiking, etc.
I keep looking at the tag numbers. 120 guys (some gals) chasing deer and 300 going after elk. No everyone is hunting alone, so there are maybe 500 people after big game. Nothing like hunting in Alaska, but I'm not whining. Most of the elk hunters are above the deer and drive them to the lower treeline boundry?
I'll be very happy with a 170 class 4x4, and won't hesitate on coming all the way home empty. Doesn't look like there is very much oakbrush or quakies in this unit. Pretty much dark timber transitioning into sage, right? I've got the 7.5 minute quads taped together on the wall at work so I have something to daydream about.
