I hunted mtn goat there 13 years ago (4 weeks in september) and a friend hunted goat this year and we both saw the same thing.Elk in the high basins and chutes week after week and no hunters. Now we were well above timber line looking down so maybe the elk hunters couldn't see them but there are a good amount in the area and you'll have it pretty much to your self. Spend some time on a dirt bike along with a little hiking get high and look down, the roads are BAAAD forget a full size 4wd.The chutes along willow creek, napoleon pass, sanford basin they all had elk, but rember we were hunting goats ,this is steep country. good luck

Lot's of area to cover, and really no big herds of elk. Yes there are elk up there, but they seem to always be scattered in groups of around 5 to 8 maximum. Very few hunters up there for bow and muzzle loader with very little success. I think the stagecoach area down cottonwood pass faired the best. Sanford Basin always has elk, but you will have to pack them out.

Are there big bucks up high in that country? What did you see above timberline for big muleys? Looks like the kind of place that could have some big deer in the early season.

I've been up there a bit and never really seen anything all that great.

Not too many bucks. And by rifle season they have moved down the valley towards Gunnison. That is where they hang out, but had a bad winter kill there.

Quite a few elk up high, but the OTC hunting is terrible along the roads. Get nasty and you'll run into elk. The deer were great until the blizzard. Give it a few years to let the deer rebound.
