My 13 year old boy was lucky enough to draw the early season youth elk hunt in Utah. We decided to hunt an area where I have been successful in years past during the general archery season. The bulls were not really responsive and we had only saw 10 elk in 4 days and on the morning of day 5 we were able to call this bull into 10 yards as Tony made the shot with the .300WSM, the bull didn't make it far. He was very clutch under this situation as many of you may know what it feels like to be there.
We had to bone him out and pack him 1.3 miles (10 hours) back to the truck. We made four trips from the bull to the trial and 3 trips from the trial to the truck. Tony's pack and my pack were full of meat as we smiled, walked and talked every step of the way. Best hunting day of my life.
I can't explain the emotions or the feelings that came over us when we put our hands on this bull. I have killed plenty of elk and nothing even compares to see your boy kill a bull, I would take this experience and excitement anyday over any elk I have ever killed.
What a day to experience the excitement and joy of my 13 year old putting the smack down on a great 5x6 bull.
