Top Mule Deer Units in Arizona?

I was wondering where you went. This has been an incredible thread. Some have laughed while others have gotten angry. IMHO each one of us have an opinion on what is the best unit and that is our opinion. What I may consider good may not be for another. The unique thing about Arizona mule deer hunting is the diversity, it,s a far diffrent world from hunting rocky mountian muleys north of the ditch than from the low desert mule deer. Quest its up to you to decide what you want and how you chose to hunt because it's only a matter of opinion on our part. I hope your choice is a sound one.

Mesquitehunter I've been painting inside my house for the little women and haven't had to much time to get on here. Got to go to work
see ya later.

Hunter1,
Thank you for the congrats.I felt lucky to get him.It was a very hot dec. hunt with no rut activity. It was in one of the military gun range unit's.I had seen some does, but this was the first buck's (three of them) I had seen in four day's of hunting. To answer your question about what species is harder to hunt.I think that to get a old smart buck, they are both hard. The coues can be more of a physically demanding hunt. But the challenge for mule deer in the desert is the small populations. Both deer require a lot of years knowledge behind good binoculars.I feel lucky because my dad had a friend in the late 1960's teach him the value of good bino's.That I know of,a group of us got some of the first swarovski's to come to Arizona. They were the 10x40 swarovski's and I think we payed about $350.I think the year was 1983.Then about a year later my dad bought the 15x60 zeiss.

Why do you guys want to make videos on how to hunt the mulies in southern AZ? Why are you so eager to get the word out on the size of the deer? Why? Just keep it on the hush hush!!!!!!

LAST EDITED ON May-02-08 AT 02:20PM (MST)[p]It was a joke by me. I was just saying nobody has done it--yet. It is a mistery to many people --for now. I don't have the money to make a video anyway, besides home videos.

i hear ya on the glassing part,i have also been blessed like your self with someone that was willing to teach me, i had stopped hunting muleys in 92 and hunted coues for the next 8 years were i took 8 of 8 biggest buck scoring 124 and some change. after that i decided it was time to get back to chasing the giant burros again. to me the burros have really pushed my buttons from time to time. as far as the video it was a joke i have a lot of video out here but it only gets shared with the closest freinds. until i take the new archery world record i am not ready to break it all down.

I agree, once a video comes out of a big buck in the dessert there will be a flood. Just look at unit 27,28 etc. They have had allot of out of staters hunting them the last 6 years. Although filming a good bow hunt and shooting a giant would be highly entertaining. One of the famous bow hunters hunted deer in San Carlos and he described it as the hardest hunt he had ever been on. That is why there isn't allot of hunt videos of dessert muleys.

I agree 100%. Getting a big desert is truly the toughest. Getting it on film---- well now your talking ufo kinda stuff. Here the best advice is, kill em' and take pictures later!

WELL LETS JUST SAY THERE IS A HOT SPOT IN EVERY UNIT.THE HARD PART IS FINDING THAT SPOT. PATIENCE ALONG WITH GOOD GLASSING AND TIME IN THE FIELD WILL PAY OFF.

Ruthunder so your saying that all the units in Arizona have hot spots out of those units what would make the list?

WELL LETS JUST SAY THAT WOULD START A WHOLE NEW TOPIC! THERE ARE ALOT OF UNITS THAT WERE NOT MENTIONED IN EARLIER POST THAT IVE SEEN SOME TOADS IN!

WOULD ANYONE OUT THERE LIKE TO SHARE PICS OF THESE "UNITS NOT MENTIONED" BY RUTHUNTER? ACCORDING TO SOME OF THE OTHER POSTS, MANY OF THESE UNITS HAVE HAD SOME TOUGH SEASONS. YOU MENTIONED SEEING TOADS IN A LOT OF THESE UNITS? WELL, JUST CURIOUS...ARE WE TALKING THE LAST 3 YEARS, 5 YEARS ETC...? JUST FOCUSING ON THE TOPIC (TOP TEN), IT'S GOOD TO HEAR THERE ARE ALOT OUT THERE BUT WHICH ONES WOULD MAKE THE TOP TEN LIST?

LAST EDITED ON May-12-08 AT 09:03AM (MST)[p]My top 10 would the 10 units I can spend the most amount of time learning. Ruthunter is right on about almost every unit having big deer. It is just up to somebody to find them. The units down on the border(30's) and the 3's and 2's also are great. I think we have now mentioned every unit in AZ. PERSONAL PREFERENCE!

Maddglasser looking at the Arizona Wildlife Trophies 2005 on page 32 you can see the top units for yielding trophies from 1990 to 2004. Now thats 4 years ago who knows what the top ten are now but in all the units in this state that have potential for big deer there not all equal whats your thought on it?

I don't think they are all equal, by any means. But I do believe, for the most part, you get out of a unit what you put into it. People are more inclined to look at a 13B tag as a supreme trophy unit than say 2B, therefor they are going to be more serious about 13B. The units I like are where I have hunted my whole life, I know the units. I have hunted the strip 3 times, it is good, but it is extremely tough as well. A large majority go there knowing it is tough but they have a good outlook, whereas they go to some of the other said units and feel dissapointed before they even start looking. When they start looking they get more dissapointed because the tactics for that area are different than the Kiabab or strip. It is all about learning the area as well as the animals in that area. I love 2B, if you hunt there don't expect much, but you could kill a 250+ buck. The 40's, don't expect an easy hunt, but you can kill a 200+ typ. 13B don't expect to see many deer, but you can kill a 250+ buck. You see the pattern?

outfit and construction. Well used to do construction until it all has stopped around here. Now just about anything(actor, website commentary, porn star...just kidding).Stay pretty busy with outfitting and construction.

Don't forget it! Next time we will have the tostado kit and it will blow your mind. The salsa is awesome. See ya again soon Mitch

Haha, you guys are off the hook. I am working for a custom home builder here in Safford.

Well I just want to say " there is no reason for any of you to come down to 36a. All we have here are illegals and Border patrol running all over the place. Talk about new quad trails....I caught the Border Patrol running quad trials out in the desert. They had Pylons and courses all laid out. What a joke.
There are no toads down here.
