Two big spring bears

LAST EDITED ON May-14-15 AT 03:40PM (MST)[p]Had a great bear hunt a few weeks back and thought I'd post up some pics. My buddy's son Trevor ended up making a perfect 270 yard shot on an awesome 450 pound chocolate bear. His skull measured 19 5/8". An absolutely beautiful bear. Couldn't have been happier for Trevor on taking his awesome trophy!
Only a few minutes later I took my bear out of the same canyon. My bear weighed in over 500 pounds and had a skull measuring
21 3/8"...After 10 years, I finally got it done on a Boone and Crockett bear.
These two big boars had been fighting each other and had beat the crud out of one another. Both had bite marks, tears, rips and cuts all over their faces and hides. Trevor's bear had two fresh gashes on its face (see the picture) and its ear was almost ripped completely off. These two bears were taking a breather in between rounds and were laying down only 60 yards from each other when we came out above them on the canyon rim.
The haul out of the canyon with both animals was a back-breaker. Didn't get back to camp until 3:00 am, but obviously it was well worth it. What great memories for all involved!!
Hope you all enjoy
Kip

You and your buddy are great Dads, Uncles, or something, those youngster will never, ever forget that outdoor experience.

Thank you for including them in your hunt and congratulations on killing two fantastic bears. You are securing support for future generations of hunters by involving them in your hunting adventures. It's the best thing you can do.

Those really are magnificent bears, I hope they were from Utah, where we need to reduce some of our bear numbers.

Thanks for sharing the photo's

Sounds like an awesome hunt. Hunting bears is one of my favorite hunts. I have to commend you on taking the kids hunting. I bet your son is the #####-of-the-walk at school right now. He will always remember that hunt. Good Dad.
450lb and 500lb bears! That's huge for a black bear! I gotta ask, how the hell did you get those out to weigh them? And, do you have a wall big enough to hang them on.
Congrats an well done.

In answer to your question Longbow6360 regarding how we get an accurate measurement of our bears weight:
I carry a flexible sewing tape/tape-measure with me in my backpack. When we get a bear down and before you cape them out, you take a tight nose-to-tail measurement and a tight girth measurement around the bears chest under his armpits. Again, we try to get a pretty tight measurement because we are not trying to make these bears bigger than they actually are....
Then we refer to a bear-sizing-chart. They are available on-line and can be located on numerous hunting and biologists websites. Most of them are generally consistent with their readings...
My bear was 79 inches long (6 feet 7 inches) and had a girth measurement of 55". That put him, based on the chart, at well over 500 lbs.
Hope that helps!

Lucky, I'm not questioning you with an evil eye, just so you know. If you do it right, those chart are more accurate than most people think. Especially the front track/nose to tail measurement. I've been in on a sh!t-ton of black/griz/Kodiak kills and I can look at your bears and say you shot some gooduns.
Keep taking those kids out and showing them what it's like away from the video games. I'll say it again, "good Dad"!

WOW 2 great bears, they sure look great together. Are you doing a rug on the floor or hanging them on a wall.
You and your kids had a good hunt.

a few guys here on MM have sent me PMs asking about the chart used for estimating a bears weight (using length and girth measurements) that I referred to in my earlier post. I have included a chart below.
Hope this helps.

Lucky, congrats on your Booner!
Thanks for sharing the chart I always wondered how they got the weight of the bears. What state were you hunting?

Thanks for your time

Bad ass! I don't care about how much they might have weighed, nor their skull measurements...that right there is a hunt of a lifetime with your boy

Super pics, love the one of the two battlers rug caped laying side by side

Epic hunt! Killer story and outcome

Cheers dudes, thanks for the post
