Unit 17

hello all, just got my dad a senior encouragement cow elk hunt for Unit 17, was planning on unit 53 or 6c but they sold out before we were able to make a purchase. With that being said ive never hunted 17 before, well be making a few trips to scout before his muzzleloader hunt in November. Can anyone recommend any areas to scout and hunt? Pretty big unit, want to spend as much time as we can scouting before the hunt. Any pointers, tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Willing to share some info on Unit, 45, 32 and 6c

You can hunt right out of magdelans not sure I spelled it right. Plenty of elk with in a few miles of town with plenty of public land to.

Make sure you have an updated map from the forest service. Big chunk of the northern San Mateos still closed from fire in the spring.

No elk here for early archery. Was tough hunting with a lot of water and lack of bugling made it tough.
