I drew a unit 23 Late archery elk tag. Is there anyone willing to point me in the right direction? Should I focus on the North or South portion of the unit? I will likely only be able to take one scouting trip, Probably the end of October. Any tips would be appreciated. Also I would be able to exchange info for southern Colorado Or the units I,ve hunted in New Mexico (51,16E,16D, and Ibex)
Thanks
Kris.

Is it the Dec hunt.

Hard to find bulls that aren't broke up. my nephew had that tag or one that was later in Unit 22 right next door and he did some spot and stalk, and setup on water holes that had fresh tracks on it. Only had a couple of bulls close enough, But they was too broken up.They did spot and try to get on some really good bulls But crusty snow wasn't letting that happen.
You got a great unit tag, I hope things go good for you on your hunt. Take the best glass you can get your hands on.

Bullseye79 I have the same tag this year myself. I'm a little familiar with the unit at this point but plan on visiting the unit much much more starting around late August early September which still may be a little early. I will start by scouting water and thick cover and as it gets closer to the hunt I will begin trying to track the bulls a bit and really utilize my game cams at that point.

I have purchased a couple maps one being just a GMU map and the other solid topo.

I will try what Gator mentioned spot and stalk and sitting water but will most likely just sit water most of the mornings and late evenings. Glass a lot mid day and see if I can find them bedding then stalk.

Hello kris
This will be my 3rd year doing that hunt its kinda a 50/50 hunt in my opinion but have seen some really nice bulls 350 to 380 on the high end that weren't all broke up. But I'm a meat hunter not after horns that's a bonus to me

Unit 23 has really come down in quality over the last couple of years. Are there still big bulls? yes. Not nearly what it was 5 years ago. It may take the huntinfool, eastmans another couple of years to figure it out, they usually lag a bit. The bottom line is too many tags, equals a reduction in quality. The same thing is occurring in unit 1 right now. I am interested in hunting colorado deer, maybe we can share some info. Anyway, pm me, I can steer you in the right direction to get into bulls, just have reasonable expectations and it will be a fun hunt. Realize a 380 bull in there right now is a tall order.

I purchase my maps from Wide World of Maps in Mesa. They have a pretty good section of maps for hunting, hiking, etc....
