Thanks for posting. I'll add a little. 4.2 in. heavy mortars platoon ("Blazing Pipes of Hell") HHC & Co. E of 1/22n Inf. Rgt.( "Regulars By God!") 4th Inf "Poison Ivy" Div. Central Highlands around Pleiku. By grace of God, I was sent to base camp (Camp Enari) to man a 4.2 in mortar on the perimeter with 90 days left! I think in two months there we fired TWO illuminating rounds! When Tet Offensive started, I was chased out of "Sin City" where the bars and girls were located in Pleiku by MP's because of suspected VC activity and where we were was"off limits". Next day the battles around Kontum and Dak To started. I thought for sure I was going to be sent into combat, but it never happened...left the "Land of the Little People" April 1968 on a flight from Saigon to Seattle. After a leave, I finished service with 2nd AD 6/1 Armored Cav Sq. in Ft. Hood, TX. I spent my last 90 days driving apc's,recon jeeps, and M-60's on FTX's and in Tank Gunnery School...even though I ETS-ed in Sept. 1968.
I was always in trouble for writing slogans on my helmet covers: "War is good business, invest your son", "War Is Hell","The only reason the US is in Southeast Asia is to corner the lucrative Nuouc Mam market" "Save 365 c-rat boxtops and win a free trip to the states" "Surrounded: Reds on the right, Reds on the left- damn those Red Ants are Hell!" Is that lizard out there in the jungle really saying "F-you"? "FTA-Finest Training Anywhere" (or "Fun, Travel, and Adventure"), "Make Piece-NOT War" "VC-Numbah 10" "Charlie- U Suck! And the horse you rode in on!" "SHORT-30 days (or whatever I had left!)" ...just a few I remember!
