West Elks Wilderness - Your Thoughts

I think I have settled in on doing an archery drop camp in the West Elks Wilderness in 54. I can draw with no points or buy a leftover tag. Not expecting to kill a big bull but will be happy with a good one. Anyone have any thoughts on why I should not go or can anyone point me in the direction of a good drop camp operator. I am considering Eagle Mountain Outfitters and Tenderfoot.

Thanks

Actually I think all our camps are full for 2012. Might want to call and check with Fred though if your interested.

I know nothing about Eagle Mountain Outfitters. However, I rifle hunt 54 and set up camp in the parking lot where Tenderfoot parks their rigs and head out to their camp. I've watched this outfit pack up and hit the trail with their hunters the day before season for the last 3 years. I would think you would be hard pressed to find greater bunch of guys to book a hunt with. I've visited with them briefly while they were getting ready to go and its obvious they know what they are doing and trully enjoy outfitting.
That being said, you are wise to book an outfitter for the West Elks if you are new to the area and do not live nearby. I see lots of hunters hunting the area but very few who hunt their every year. Most hunt 1 year and then don't see them again. There is good reason for it, and good reason why there are always leftover tags for 54. There are elk there to be sure, but the area is definetely challenging.
If you book with Tenderfoot, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-09-12 AT 06:22AM (MST)[p]I'm mailing out our deposit for an archery drop with Tenderfoot in 2013 today....Fred sounds like a stand-up guy and I have talked to most of the references he gave me, they all can't wait to go back with TFO. Fred put us in the Pass Creek camp for the last week of Sept. 2013, right be fore I deploy again....can't wait for this hunt!
