When to Cape

Need to know how long I have before I need to cape the whole critter.

This year will be my first backcounty hunt. Plan on heading in about 8+ miles or so. So it will take a day to get off the Mt., and another days drive home.

I read in a muley book, that if you cannot get the head out right away, you need to cape the face too so it doesn't start to go bad.

How long do I have?
Your suggestions, experience would be appreciated.

keep it cool, if its cold the cape will be fine for days a few hours in the hot sun can ruin a cape on the head or off,

I should mention the ears are the first to get ruined in the heat, if you cape the animal or not, during the heat of day keep it covered with a jacket or sleeping bag, several days are fine without caping if kept cool
