how does the elk population west of chloride/winston compare to some of the other units. I've hunted 16c,15, and 16a. all were great units. i believe this is unit 21 maybe. i only ask because i was going to change up my application a little this year. would it be a good place to archery hunt. thanks for any resonse given.

it's a low elk population in comparison to the rest of the Gila being it's the edge of the unit and habitat...you are correct that it's Unit 21...21A from the Gila NF boundary west to the continental divide and 21B from the NF boundary east to I25 and south to I10 but that is mostly private so be aware of where you are hunting if in the B side...also, what is not private is primarily creosote desert...as for the terrain west of Winston and Chloride...dry, steep up and down...work hard to find elk...they are there but you need to know where to look...the A side is about 10-12 miles wide and about 75-80 miles long...few roads which is good but the dimensions make scouting a long process...personally, I love the unit but it has taken years of scouting and hunting to find them regularly...good luck...

In pictures it looks like it might be pretty decent deer country. Are there many in there? Or have the elk pushed the deer somewhere else?
