2006 NW Colorado buck

I made a trip to Northwestern Colorado early November, the weather was quite warm,it had snowed during the first combined
season, I think many of the deer migrated further out of our area, saw lots of small 4X4s, Opening morning I took this buck, he's not very wide, but nice and tall fair amount of mass scores around 150", I did see one buck around 26" two days before the opener, but he was thin horned and not real tall. In 25 years, this was the first trip to Colorado I didn't put on my Sorels!

My son, Mike had flown up to Colorado, from Arizona, he goes to Arizona State, just to hang out, when this buck bolted from his bed, I blew a bleat on my cow elk call, (it will stop a buck it its track) I had given Mike my range finder so as to help, we new the buck was very tall, so even I was looking for a little wider buck, bingo this guy will work!, Mike said 230 yds. and there you go. kbuckthomas88

Unit 3/301 I started hunting up there in 1979, lot's of private land, you just need to get maps, and also these units are along the migration route for deer and elk when they bail out off the Elkheads/Black Mountain heading towards Maybell, and the Yampa river. In the past we have seen some real impressive Bucks there. In 2004 after harvesting a nice 24" 4 point we started seeing lots bigger bucks, I filmed one around 28" and we had running around camp that was also pushing 30". It just depends on the weather.
